Cody Johnson packed a prolific punch in 2021. And he’s planning more of the same in 2022. In addition to releasing Human: The Double Album in October 2021, the Texas native closed the year by dropping his first holiday record, A Cody Johnson Christmas. That’s 28 total tunes to keep Cody’s fans content, including the current Top 20 single, “’Til You Can’t.”

If what’s already on the slate for the first half of 2022 is any indication, Cody is going to be a busy man in the new year. Cody has more than 25 tour stops on the calendar, including an opening-night gig as the headliner of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on February 28. Just a few days later, Cody will join the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame on March 3.

And . . . during a recent chat with Outsider, Cody teased that a role on Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone or 1883 could be in his future.

Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame

On March 3, Cody will receive the Spirit of Texas Award and be inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, which honors those who have “shown excellence in competition, business, and support of rodeo and the Western lifestyle in Texas.” Cody will join Lone Star State luminaries such as Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Pat Green, and Clay Walker in the HOF.

“To be associated with the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame is a great honor, because people like George Strait have received that, Lyle Lovett has received that award,” said Cody Johnson to Outsider. “And Red Steagall, who everybody knows I look up to a lot. Man, it’s just a really cool thing. And I think it’s another notch in the belt for the cowboy side of me, too. That is a level of authenticity that I’m always very proud of. Very proud to live the Western cowboy lifestyle that I live and so it’s a great honor.”

Cody Johnson in the Sheridan Universe

If you’re a fan of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount TV series Yellowstone (and who isn’t?), you probably noticed Cody’s “Dear Rodeo” was featured during Season 4, Episode 9. Fans of the series may have more to look forward to, as Cody hinted at a possible collaboration with Sheridan on Yellowstone—or his new series, 1883. And why not, Cody has plenty of cowboy cred as a former rodeo bull rider.

“Taylor and I have talked for years about me getting a part on [Yellowstone],” says Cody Johnson to Outsider. “And we discussed this [in 2020], me being in a season of 1883. The timelines didn’t work out, but we’re talking about in 2022 getting me on board with either Yellowstone or 1883.”

“I think it’s great to have Western lifestyle in the forefront. You can’t make cowboy cool if cowboy ain’t cool. That’s kind of the way I’ve always been with my music. Taylor’s always had that gritty, Western edge, because he lives that every day.”
