Kayce Dutton: Conflicting Moments
In celebration of Luke Grimes’ birthday, we’re reliving some of his best moments from “Yellowstone.” He plays Kayce Dutton, the youngest member of the Dutton family. His father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), sees a lot of himself in his son. They often have their differences, but as the series progresses, Kayce and John start seeing eye-to-eye. These father sons moments show that Kayce is torn between choosing the ranch and his father, or his own family.
Additionally, one very poignant moment is when Kayce kills his brother-in-law. It’s killed or be killed for the former Navy SEAL in this situation. In season 1, episode 1, the Dutton family is locked in a battle over cattle. Kayce is ultimately forced to choose sides in a matter of seconds. He shoots his wife’s brother, Robert (Jeremiah Bitsui), not only in self-defense but also because Robert kills his brother.
Then there are the scenes where Kayce Dutton squares off against Rip Wheeler. The two have their differences. Rip believes that Kayce should return to run the ranch since his time with the military is over. Kayce, on the other hand, wants to blaze a trail for himself.
Kayce Dutton: The Husband
The two sometimes frustrate us so much that we end up yelling at the screen, but Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Kayce Dutton are deeply connected. We can feel the chemistry and conflict between these two. However, the moments these two share together are some of our favorites.
They start the series with a strong bond, but it quickly gets tested after Kayce loses his brother and kills Monica’s. Then another series of events happen and Monica moves out of the house with their son Tate (Brecken Merrill). Kayce returns to the Dutton ranch, but he doesn’t give up on their relationship. He ends up winning Monica over and the two move forward with trying to navigate their family dynamics.
Another one of our favorite moments that Kayce and Monica share, is their time at the summer camp on the Yellowstone ranch. The two are seemingly able to leave their problems behind and forget what’s happening in “real life.” Fans can feel their connection be restored.
“Without her, there would be nothing,” Grimes says about Kayce and Monica’s relationship on the hit show. “There’s so much love there.”
“There’s a bond between them that will last until they’re in the ground,” Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, says about the couple.
Luke Grimes Plays a Father
Not only is Kayce trying to find his way in life, but he’s also trying to raise his son, Tate. The two share a bond that continues to grow as the series progresses. We have a couple of favorite moments that Kayce shares with Tate.
One is when Kayce blows up a tree stump that he can’t pull out with a tractor. As we said, he’s trying to do the right thing. Right before he lights the fuse Kayce tells Tate to cover his ears and open his mouth. The explosion happens and there’s no sight of the stubborn stump.
“Why didn’t you do that in the first place?” Tate asks his dad. Tate and Kayce go look at the new hole in the ground. As they’re walking to it, Tate asks, “You’re going to be in a big time out.”
Kayce simply responds with, “I’m always in a timeout.”
Another favorite moment of ours is when Kayce goes full-on soldier to save Tate after he’s been kidnapped. He makes Monica a promise to get their son back and to kill the men that took him.
