In only a matter of hours, the “Yellowstone” off-season will end and a brand new season of the hit series will begin.

One of the biggest mysteries going into the upcoming fourth season is the mindset of Jamie Dutton. Leaving the third season, we have to ponder just exactly where Jamie’s loyalties are. Jame is such an interesting “Yellowstone” character because there are a couple of directions he could go in. He could remain loyal to the Duttons, the family that adopted him as an infant and raised him as their own. He could side with his Biological father, Garrett Randall, who he only met last season. He could say to heck with all of this, move to Hawaii and spend his days drinking margaritas on the beach.

All joking aside, Jamie Dutton may hold the key to the fourth season plot. His next actions, post-Dutton family attack, will set an early tone for the new season. In other words, Jamie’s next movie is very important to the “Yellowstone scope. Who better to give us a glimpse at Jamie’s thought process than the actor who plays him, Wes Bentley. In an interview with Channel Guide Magazine, Bentley lays out his hopes for Jamie in season four.

“I have a hard time with this, for a couple of reasons,” he says. “I tend to, when I’m playing my characters, my first rule is to not judge them or try not to have a personal opinion or feeling about them. But over the seasons, that’s harder than on a film. I do catch myself wanting stuff for him because I know him. But I also know he is not a great guy. He hasn’t done great things, so I feel weird about wanting something good for a man who’s murdered somebody.”

‘Yellowstone’ Season Four Will Shed Light on Jamie Dutton

Though not exactly a “Yellowstone” fan favorite, Jamie is certainly one of the most intriguing characters on the show. Bentley says it is a challenge to play a character with so many levels and great depth.

“It’s hard, but I play him,” he says. “So there’s an empathy that I can never describe, an identification, that I know that in his heart, beyond all that, there’s a better guy than what he’s been. So I kind of want him to find some form of peace. That’s it. Even if he’s that bad guy, I still want him to find some form of peace and some love given to him. I do. I feel bad saying it, but I do.”

While Jamie may go on a search for peace, he’s not likely to find it at the “Yellowstone” Ranch. Some fans believe he is behind the attacks on the Dutton family to conclude season three.

We’ll learn more about Jamie’s motivations tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
