Ah, the internet. Where ideas come freely, and opinions follow. Such is the case over on Reddit’s ever-active Yellowstone Board. But today, fans aren’t just discussing The Dutton Yellowstone Ranch. They’ve thrown another excellent Modern Western into the mix: Longmire.
“Pick one Longmire series book for a movie and populate it with your favorite cast from Yellowstone (or others) with Taylor Sheridan adapting and directing,” asks u/IcantseeTXfromhere of his fellow Redditors.
This, as you’ve already undoubtedly thought, is an incredibly specific request. But it’s at least an interesting one for Western fans.
“Mine would be A Cold Dish with Costner as Walt, and Birmingham as Henry. I don’t think I like Reilly as Vic but maybe you do. I was thinking of Bentley or Hauser as Turk,” IcantseeTXfromhere continues. “Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!”
Things quickly take a turn, however, as Reddit‘s Yellowstone fans begin expressing their own wishes. “I’d rather see a Yellowstone/Longmire crossover episode or movie, with the original actors…” replies u/Wolfgar57. “Sorry, but never read any of the books. I didn’t even realize there were books until 3/4 of the way through the series,” they continue with several laughing emojis.
Color this Outsider guilty there, too. Longmire is a great Modern Western (and I’ll watch anything with Katee Sackhoff in it) but I had no idea there were books!
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Brace for a Taylor Sheridan Universe
To round out the discussion, OP IcantseeTXfromhere replies that “Yeah I’m kinda partial to the book series but also enjoyed the TV series. A crossover would be fun and would like to see what Sheridan could do with the Longmire stuff.”
This is a fair request, as Taylor Sheridan has become the shepherd of the Modern Western genre and its resurgence in popular culture. It began with his celebrated film trilogy and has absolutely exploded with Yellowstone.
So what’s next? Why, more Yellowstone, of course! It would be great to see Sheridan adapt Longmire, but the property has already been handled well. Instead, the man is busy building a true Yellowstone Empire.
Soon, we’ll have not just Yellowstone proper, but prequel 1883 and Texas-based spinoff 6666 right alongside, too. All three shows will tell the Dutton story through different angles, times, and characters. And if you love Yellowstone (which, let’s face it, that’s why you’re here, too), then chances are these two shows are going to blow you away, too.
1883, in particular, is one this Outsider is truly excited about. It’s hard to beat a period-correct Western, and it’s been a long while since Hollywood gave this classic genre a hard-go. And there’s no one better to do it than Taylor Sheridan.
