‘Yellowstone’ Star Brecken Merrill Takes Fans Behind-the-Scenes of Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan Teaching Him To Rope

by Jon D. B.

It’s Sunday, Yellowstone fans, and you know what that means: More fantastic behind-the-scenes shots from the show’s own Brecken Merrill!

“It’s #yellowstonetv Sunday!” the show’s youngest star announces on his official Instagram. And in case any Outsider could ever forget: “You guys, Season 4 is just around the corner!!”

Mere weeks remain now until Yellowstone returns to Paramount Network, and it feels good. In the meantime, young master Merrill is continuing his Sunday tradition with these truly great BTS shots.

“For today’s #bts treat I’m sharing some impromptu roping lessons from Season 1,” Brecken begins of the shots below. “I have mastered roping fence posts, chairs, and other inanimate objects. I have yet to rope an animal, unless you count my mom, who let me practice roping on her even though it meant she got smacked in the head a few times.”

Now that is priceless. Considering she helps run the young Yellowstone actor’s Instagram, we’re sure she knows her son is referring to her as an “animal,” too. But hey, that’s exactly what we humans are, isn’t it?

In the first couple of shots, we see Kevin Costner himself teaching a tiny Season 1 Brecken some lassoing skills. Both are dressed in their Dutton characters, with Brecken’s on-screen parents – Kelsey Asbille and Luke Grimes – present, as well:

“Taylor Sheridan is an awesome roper,” Merrill continues of his next Instagram shots. “The cowboys like to play cowboy games during downtime and we get to watch them team roping.”

And as the Yellowstone star says: “If you’ve never seen cowboys team roping do yourself a favor and look it up. The speed and skill it takes to head and heel a calf is impressive.”

‘Yellowstone’ Spin-off on The Way

Spoken like a true Outsider! It’s beyond impressive. To this day, I still cannot believe the sheer accuracy and skill my two great uncles (both cowboys) possess. But we’re not here to talk about my family, now are we?

As Yellowstone fans know, the show gains its authenticity through, well, authenticity. As Merrill shows us with his behind-the-scenes shots every Sunday, the show is made by people who live this life in reality. Creator Taylor Sheridan himself grew up on his family ranch, and he remains a prominent rancher to this day. In fact, he purchased the largest ranch in Texas, historic 6666 Ranch, this year in order to keep it in shape as a working ranch.

The history and scope of 6666 (Four-Sixes) is tremendous, and Texas-native Sheridan will capitalize on this through his very own fictional retelling of the Ranch’s modern history with Yellowstone spinoff, 6666. The show will include core Yellowstone cast member Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom, too, so it’s sure to be a must-watch for fans of cable’s #1 drama.

As for Yellowstone proper, the show returns with Season 4 on November 7.
