From a Texas cowboying legend to country music’s biggest stars, here’s all the surprise appearances that elevated Yellowstone‘s riveting Season 4. But first, be warned of major spoilers ahead.

Cowboying Legend Buster Welch Teaches Jimmy the Ways of Texas

As Yellowstone would announce on their official Twitter the day of the episode, “That is THE Buster Welch!”

Their tweet served the greater good, too, as this big cameo flew over the heads of many ‘a Yellowstone fans. But as the show itself would state, Buster Welch is “One of the three Gods of Texas” regardless.

The cowboying legend is the embodiment of the American profession, and his resume is far too extensive to sum up here as a result. The following video from the NCHA, however, does a fine job of displaying his boundless knowledge:

NCHA Legend Mr. Buster Welch has seen a lot of changes in the cutting arena over the years and has won more NCHA Open Futurity Titles than anyone else. He sat down recently with some other NCHA Legends- Lindy Burch and Gary Bellenfant to discuss the cattle settling and how it has affected modern day cutting competition and one of the skills involved with cutting a cow.

Tim McGraw Sets the Stage for ‘1883’ in Poignant ‘Yellowstone’ Flashbacks

In kind, our first look at Tim McGraw’s ancestral Dutton would come weeks before 1883‘s premiere. The country megastar made his debut as James Dutton, great-grandfather to John Dutton (Kevin Costner) in this early Yellowstone Season 4 flashback.

Within, James Dutton has an impactful run-in with Montana’s Indigenous peoples alongside his sons, Spencer and John Dutton (below).

Tim McGraw made his Yellowstone debut during a flashback to the year 1893 on the premiere episode of season 4. Yellowstone airs Sundays at 8/7c on Paramount Network.

Faith Hill Embodies Ancestral Matriarch in Flashbacks

McGraw would return later in Yellowstone Season 4 alongside his wife, Faith Hill, too. In another flashback late in the season, Hill would appear as matriarch Margaret Dutton as she imparts wisdom on her two sons as a near-death James returns from a run-in with horse thieves.

We’ve since seen much more of her brilliant character in 1883, with more surely to come.

Taylor Sheridan Makes Surprise Return as Travis Wheatley

Boundless theories prevailed while fans waited a year-and-a-half for Yellowstone‘s return. But no one foresaw the pivotal role Taylor Sheridan would play in the 4th season of his show.

As Yellowstone proper began setting up the events of incoming Texas-based spinoff 6666, Sheridan would return in a big way as horsemaster Travis Wheatley. Wheatley hasn’t been seen since the earliest seasons of the show, but his return set the stage for the future of the Dutton empire. He also dragged a exiled Jimmy down to Texas, where his character’s bleed-over into 6666 would begin.

Other Notable Appearances

Yellowstone Season 4 would see the surprise return of long lost characters, too. Both the mother of Jamie Dutton’s child, Christina, and the child himself would appear.

Then, former Dutton ranch hand and Broken Rock Reservation resident Avery would re-enter the fray, as well. All in all, Season 4 would go a long way in surprising fans with revelations like these. And we can’t wait to see what Season 5 brings for cable’s #1 show.
