After the Season 3 finale of “Yellowstone,” more than one protagonist’s life hangs in the balance. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) lies bleeding by the side of the road, the victim of a drive-by shooting. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) has vanished into the explosion that shook her office after her assistant opened a suspicious package.
And Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes)? We last saw him taking cover behind his desk as gunmen stormed into his office.
But who would have bothered to try to kill the new livestock commissioner? “Yellowstone” fans recently got into a dispute on Reddit over that question.
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Debate Who Tried to Kill Kayce
One fan floated an interesting theory: that the attacks were not coordinated, and different players had gone after each Dutton. The fan suggested that Chief Thomas Rainwater’s (Gil Birmingham) people went after Kayce, Roarke (Josh Holloway) went after Beth and Garrett Randall (Will Patton), Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) biological father, went after John.
One fan points to a quote from Angela Blue Thunder. “Going off what she said in the car with Rainwater about following the western rules instead of the native rules (paraphrasing)! Randall makes sense for the John hit, and Beth makes sense after the Yemen comment. It seems like a stretch to have three folks coordinate three hits at the same time, but at least there is some traction to the theory!”
Other fans agreed, saying the guns-blazing, broad-daylight approach to killing Kayce fit with Angela Blue Thunder’s (Q’orianka Kilcher) brash, take-no-prisoners style.
Would Rainwater’s People Really Go After Kayce?
But some other “Yellowstone” fans weren’t buying it. They pointed out that Rainwater and Blue Thunder had just aligned themselves with the Duttons and filed a major class-action lawsuit, which they hoped the Duttons would join. Would they risk jeopardizing all that to go after the family-favorite Dutton now?
“Kayce, as he said to Felix, has been ‘nothing but a friend’ to the natives. I don’t see them going after Kayce and I don’t think Rainwater would allow it,” another fan posted.
But given all that Rainwater knows about Kayce and the events surrounding Lee Dutton’s (Dave Annable) death, is it possible that Rainwater could turn on Kayce? Or could the attack on Kayce have come from a different source – perhaps a competitor for Montana governor, which Kayce’s constituents had recently encouraged him to run for when the attack happened?
One thing’s for sure: Taylor Sheridan has proven himself adept at taking “Yellowstone” in surprising new directions. Perhaps that’s why fans totally get into guessing where he’s going to go next.
The series co-creator and writer has already written Season 5, which the cast was supposed to start shooting in July. But in the meantime, fans are on pins and needles waiting for the Season 4 premiere, which lands Nov. 7. Watch the latest trailer here.
