There’s no way that The Godfather could have been the inspiration behind Paramount Network’s hit show, Yellowstone, right? One fan on Reddit thinks that might be the case.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Yellowstone. The series follows the Dutton family, owners of the largest contiguous ranch in the entire country. There’s no doubt that the storyline and setting for the show are unique. But fans online have found similarities with the iconic movie, The Godfather. One user on the popular forum Reddit explained as much in a post titled, “Another Godfather (expanded) similarity post”.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of The Godfather series and I’ve noticed similarities from the jump and I’d like to point them out,” the post begins.
Similarities Between ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Godfather’ Characters
Let’s talk about the similarities between the characters from Yellowstone and those from The Godfather. The Reddit post begins with Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes).
“[Kayce] is a war veteran who chose not to be a part of the “family business” but came back and was essentially left no choice when his father decides to choose him as a successor much to his siblings (Fredo) scorn. The further he falls into this rabbit hole, the more he is corrupted from who he originally was.”
Next up is Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley).
“Jamie is basically Fredo. He’s as smart as Fredo is charismatic. He exists only to get dunked on consistently by his family and eventually grows to resent them because of it. They view him as weak and he views them as cruel. This leads to Fredo’s betrayal much like Jamie with his ‘new’ family.”
And, of course, this post wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).
“Beth is essentially Sonny. Hot headed, tactical, and cold. This eventually led to Sonny’s demise and eventual rise of Michael. This same attitude has placed Beth in mortal danger a la Season 3 finale.”
Finally, that brings us to the main character in Yellowstone, John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
“John Dutton (Vito) is an old and wise patriarch who thrives on parting wisdom via long and drawn out monologues. He believes in the old but sensible way. The amalgamation of [Kayce], Beth, and Jamie. Smart, ruthless, and a natural born leader. The difference is that he is older and wise and desperately searching for a successor to his life’s work, his ranch (family).”
The user also explains how one could draw small parallels from Tom Hagen and Rip Wheeler. Both are orphans who hold a similar family advisor-type role.
What do you guys think? One Yellowstone fan left a comment saying they could see The Godfather playing a part in Taylor Sheridan’s creation of the show.
“I can see this totally being Taylor Sheridan’s inspiration for Yellowstone and it actually tracks.”
