The cast of the “Yellowstone” spinoff “1883” is turning into an epic one. Not only are country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill involved, the cast also includes Sam Elliott. The show recently announced that movie star Billy Bob Thornton is now joining in on the fun.

Thornton has reportedly been brought in to play the character of Marshal Jim Courtright. This lawman is said to be someone who encounters the Duttons – the ancestors of those in “Yellowstone” – as they are traveling to Montana from Texas.

McGraw and Hill are playing the ancestors – James Dutton and Margaret Dutton. Also, Elliott is playing Shea Brennan. He is a Pinkerton agent who is helping the Duttons make their way to Montana.

One Fan Describes Thornton as ‘Versatile’

All of this casting news has been happily received by most “Yellowstone” fans. And the news that Billy Bob Thornton will appear in “1883” is just icing on the cake. Some of the fans shared their excitement on Reddit since the news broke.

“Billy Bob Thornton is a versatile actor. I’ve never seen him play in anything where he wasn’t 100 percent believable in the character he’s playing and have always enjoyed and appreciated his performances,” user DaBetterILkmyDawg shared.

“This is a big one for me. Huge fan of him. ‘Goliath’ is a great show with him as well,” DietFoods posted in another Reddit thread.

One user talked about how Billy Bob Thornton has joined the “1883” cast in a guest role. “His part is described as a ‘guest star role’ rather than a series regular. Here’s the definition of ‘guest star role.’ ‘Guest stars are actors who appear in one episode (sometimes more) whose characters are often in multiple scenes and play a significant role in the story. If the role is particularly meaningful, a show may cast a well-known actor as a guest star,'” iheartsev also posted.

One ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘1883’ Star Shared His Excitement About Billy Bob Thornton Joining the Cast

Also, “Yellowstone” fans aren’t the only ones excited about Billy Bob Thornton joining the cast of “1883.” One of the spinoff’s stars was also happy to hear that news.

That star is Tim McGraw. He should be well aware of what the 66-year-old Thornton brings to the table. The two worked together on “Friday Night Lights.” McGraw shared his thoughts about his new costar on Twitter on Friday, Sept. 10.

“So cool to have Billy Bob Thornton join 1883!! We worked together on Friday Night Lights….can’t wait to team up on this one!” McGraw shared.

McGraw has also shared his excitement to be part of the “1883” series. “This is truly a dream job. (‘Yellowstone’ creator) Taylor (Sheridan) has found a way of storytelling that brilliantly creates these epic dramas and family sagas with so much depth and creativity,” he said in August 2021.
