‘Yellowstone’: The Jamie Dutton Connection to Tim McGraw’s ‘1883’ Character You Missed

by Jon D. B.

What we know of the Yellowstone family is expanding considerably through 1883, and there’s a pivotal connection to Jamie Dutton fans missed. But first, be warned of major spoilers for both shows ahead.

Jamie has been ostracized from his adoptive Dutton family, and the blame for this certainly goes both ways. Season 4 is building Wes Bentley’s character a family of his own, however. This begs the question:

Will Jamie and Christina’s son bear the Dutton family name? Or will their child become a Randall through his own bloodline?

While Jamie seems like a lost cause at this point, there’s one pivotal connection to 1883 that may show how he’ll always be a Dutton no matter what.

Is Jamie Named After ‘1883’s James Dutton?

Through their birthnames alone, it certainly seems Jamie Dutton is named after his adoptive father’s great-grandfather, James Dutton (Tim McGraw).

The animosity between Jamie and John Dutton is at a peak. But as a child, Jamie was never told he was adopted, nor was he treated as such. He received the same overbearing, twisted-yet-pure love from John as Lee, Beth, and Kayce.

Realizing that John may have named his adopted son after a prominent figure from his own lineage adds to this significantly, too. If John were to think of Jamie flippantly (as many fans accuse), why would he chose the name of his great-grandfather – the man who founded the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch – to bestow upon him?

James is/was the most pivotal Dutton patriarch to this dynasty outside of John himself. To pass that name down to a son not born of your own blood holds significant meaning. And it may be the key to removing the enormous wedge between Jamie and John.

Could There Be Another James Dutton In Between ‘1883’ and ‘Yellowstone’?

Furthermore, the flashback that begins Yellowstone Season 4, Episode 8 shows that James and Margaret have another son after their first (who we meet as a tiny John in 1883). This second Dutton son, Spencer, would be the younger brother to John (I) born sometime after 1883.

And remember, Jamie now has his own biological son in his life now; a little boy we don’t know the name of, either. Something tells us Yellowstone hasn’t told us the name of Jamie’s baby yet for a reason, too. If this little one becomes a James or a John (unlikely), then Jamie will certainly have made his way back to the Duttons.

Regardless, we’re excited to see where the family tree of 1883 and Yellowstone leads. It’s been one hell of a ride so far. Until then, be sure to check out Outsider’s Dutton Family Tree where we’re connecting all the Dutton dots for television’s most compelling family.
