“Yellowstone” is quoting Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) in an ominous sign for the Dutton family in Season 4 of the hit Paramount Network series.
“’One leader falls, another rises,’” “Yellowstone” tweeted Tuesday.
What Could ‘Yellowstone’ Quote Portend?
John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is the undisputed leader of the Dutton Ranch, which is, in the show, the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. (In real life, a ranch in Texas holds that title.) And as the Season 3 finale ended, things were not looking so good for him. The Dutton family patriarch had stopped to help a woman by the side of the road only to be gunned down in a drive-by shooting.
As the Season 4 trailers have hinted, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Dutton’s enforcer and right-hand man, eventually comes across Dutton bloodied and unconscious by the roadside. But is it too late? “Yellowstone” is not giving too much away on that score.
So could Dutton be the leader who falls? It’s hard to imagine the Dutton ranch without him. And Costner, who is also an executive producer of the series, has not dropped any hints that he’s leaving. But who knows? “Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan did kill off Dutton’s eldest son, Lee (Dave Annable), in the first episode. And he’s shown a willingness to take the series in surprising directions.
Or does Rainwater’s quote apply to the villains in Season 4? Roarke Morris actor Josh Holloway has let it slip that the Market Equities hotshot is not long for this world in Season 4, and should have cared more about conservation. So is it Roarke who falls in Season 4, only to be replaced by a new villain?
Then again, perhaps the quote portends trouble for Rainwater himself. The Broken Rock Reservation chief has joined forces with live wire Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher), who has stopped just short of open rebellion against a chief she views as too conciliatory to the likes of the Duttons. Could he face a challenger in Season 4?
Don’t Forget to Tune in on Nov. 7
Of course, Dutton is not the only fan-favorite character who was in trouble as Season 3 ended. The lives of Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) also hang in the balance. And there will be hell to pay if Sheridan kills all of them off.
But you never know. And “Yellowstone” has been really ratcheting up the suspense as the Season 4 premiere draws nearer, hinting at some formidable challenges for the Dutton Ranch and its crew.
The two-hour season premiere drops on Sunday, Nov. 7. Hang tight, “Yellowstone” fans.
