‘Yellowstone’ TV: Who Plays Young John Dutton in Flashback Scenes?

by Thad Mitchell

It might be every actor’s dream to a play younger version of Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone character John Dutton.

John is the grizzled old cowboy who heads up Yellowstone Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in Montana. John Dutton is a character with a lot of depth and angles and Costner plays the part to perfection.

With a deep and scraggly voice and rugged good looks, it would hard to imagine anyone else playing John Dutton. But, someone else does play John Dutton from time to time and the honor falls on actor Josh Lucas.

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan often utilizes “flashback” scenes from John’s past to enhance his character. We have seen the younger John Dutton speak to his deceased father, romance his wife and rule his ranch with an iron fist.

Lucas does an incredible job of keeping the alignment of Costner’s John Dutton. Much like Costner’s character, Josh Lucas’ John Dutton looks right at home on Yellowstone Ranch.

Yellowstone Actor Josh Lucas Talks Playing Young John Dutton

One of Lucas’ best scenes on Yellowstone is when John Dutton discovers that his wife has fallen off her horse and died. It is an intense scene, to say the least, and Lucas nails it as the younger “JD” as he likes to call him. In a 2018 interview, he discusses the scene and much more on his Yellowstone character.

The 49-year-old primarily works in film but has also made television appearances. A few of Lucas’ other most notable roles include films “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Ford vs. Ferarri” and “A Beautiful Mind.”

It isn’t known if Lucas will appear in season four of Yellowstone as Dutton but fans certainly hope to see more of the cowboy’s past.

The fate of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton is very much up in the air after a riveting season three finale. Dutton is shot in the chest several times while attempting to change a tire for a family stranded on the roadside.

He takes several shots to the chest before the attackers drive off in a van. Yellowstone fans believe he survives the attack but that has not been confirmed by the show’s producers.

Yellowstone fans are on the edge of their seats as the show will make its return this summer.
