John Dutton treats rules more like guidelines, but most of the time on “Yellowstone” it’s a Dutton world and everyone else is just living in it.
This clip supports exactly what we’re talking about. John’s son Kayce, played by Luke Grimes, says, “What happened to cool heads?” John, played by Kevin Costner, simply replies, “I didn’t mean me.”
It seems Dutton often sets the rules but doesn’t follow them. In this case, the two are out on the massive acreage that is Dutton’s ranch and wielding their livestock agent badges. When they’re not taking care of the Yellowstone Ranch, Kayce is heading up the Livestock Commission.
Kayce and some fellow livestock agents are about to confront some of John’s past enemies that are running buffalo on the other side of their fence. Buffalo carry a disease that’s easily transmittable to cattle, and the Dutton family wants to make sure that this doesn’t happen and the buffalo have their vaccines. After all, John does run the largest cattle ranch in the United States with help from his adult children.
Other Cases Where John Dutton Doesn’t Follow the Rules
One thing the western drama doesn’t prepare you for is how much death and dismemberment happens on the show. However, it’s something that we should’ve expected with the show’s co-creators background. Taylor Sheridan did hail from “Sons of Anarchy.”
Our point is that these rules don’t apply to John either, at least not yet. Furthermore, John hasn’t committed any murders on-scene seasons one through three. He’s a BA rancher, but don’t let his quotes of ferocious defense of family and land: he doesn’t follow all of those rules either, as he hasn’t been caught red-handed with a murder so far in the series.
He’s not shy about ordering others, like Rip to, or telling trespassers they have a deathly fate if they return. One of his eery quotes from the show warns, “I’m gonna leave these holes just like this, right here in the middle of my field. And if you ever come back here again, I’m gonna fill ’em. Understand?”
To further our “rules don’t apply case,” Dutton is always fighting for his land. After all, it’s been in the family for six generations and John wants it to carry on with many more. However, it seems like there’s always someone trying to take it. But, of course, that’s something to expect. He says, “It’s the one constant in life. You build something worth having, someone’s gonna try to take it.”
Dutton does fight above the table for the property, but sometimes he has to take on the mafia mentality to get his point across.
