‘Yellowstone’ Star Cole Hauser Tributes the ‘Great John Madden’ After His Passing

Yellowstone star Cole Hauser is a serious football fan. And so it’s only right that the actor would post something in tribute to football legend John Madden upon his death today at age 85.

“Today one of the great coaches, teachers and commentators passed away,” Hauser posted to his personal Instagram page, along with a black-and-white picture of a young Madden in a Raiders cap. “The great John Madden. @raiders godspeed!”

John Madden Died Unexpectedly Tuesday

Madden was a Hall of Fame coach for the Oakland Raiders as well as a sports broadcaster who spent time at every major network over the course of his career. During his coaching tenure, he won 103 regular-season games and brought the Raiders to a Super Bowl XI win. As a broadcaster, he won an Emmy Award for his color commentary, announcing 11 Super Bowls from 1979 to 2009, per the Boston Globe.

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to [Madden’s wife] Virginia [and his sons] Mike, Joe and their families,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”

Madden joined the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He was inducted by Al Davis, who called the Raiders coach “a brilliant coach. A loyal and trusted friend. A Raider.”

The NFL said Madden died unexpectedly but did not disclose his cause of death.

Yellowstone Star Cole Hauser Says in Football, As in Acting, Give It Your All

Acting, in Hauser’s view, is not so different from Madden’s line of work. Like the best football players and coaches when they’re on the field, the best actors give their all when they’re on set. And Hauser himself strives to live up to the greats by constantly putting his best effort into every take.

“Remember not to get lazy,” Hauser told The Havok Journal last year. “Lazy to me is not an option. Keep pushing it. Keep trying something new. My [Yellowstone] character and the show are doing well right now, but I continue to push it and explore.”

Hauser then quoted the author and management consultant Peter F. Drucker, who said: “Quality has no finish line.”

“If you are going to do something, do it to the best of your ability,” the Yellowstone star explained. “Don’t half ass anything. If you are in school, do the best that you can. If you are playing football, soccer, whatever your passion is, give it your all.”

Madden certainly gave football his all. As a Raiders fan, Hauser no doubt feels his loss all the more keenly. Condolences to Raiders fans everywhere today.
