The official “Yellowstone” podcast dropped today, Outsiders, and it’s chock-full of analysis and hot takes on the show and characters.
Host Jefferson White (Jimmy) sat down with Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) and Wes Bentley (Jamie Dutton) to talk about the two brothers and “what it means to be a Dutton.” You can listen to the full podcast here on Spotify, but the show’s official Instagram account also posted a teaser.
During one of the teaser clips, White talked with Bentley about Jamie’s character arc over the “Yellowstone” seasons. Really, it seems like things started going downhill for Jamie once he followed his father’s orders to go to Harvard for Law School, according to White and Bentley.
“Jamie did what his father asked him to do, and in a lot of ways that changed his trajectory,” White said. “And sort of separated him, alienated him, isolated him from the life he had known. And the sort of sense of shared destiny with his brothers.”
Bentley added, “He was pulled in. He was told who he was, and it wasn’t who he wanted to be.”
We might never know who Jamie wanted to be. But what we do know is that he was desperate for his father’s approval. And so, to make John happy, Jamie decided to study law and become the family’s legal champion. Jamie got the Duttons out of more than one tough legal situation and proved that he could be a damn good lawyer. But what would he have become if he hadn’t followed his father’s path?
Maybe a cowboy and horse trainer, like Kayce. Maybe the head of the ranch, like Lee was supposed to. But now that he’s “free” of John’s supposed clutches, Jamie technically has the freedom to do whatever he wants. And he’s never felt more confused and conflicted.
Where Will Jamie’s Actions Take Him This Season on ‘Yellowstone?’
Jamie decided that he wanted to develop a relationship with his biological father, Garrett Randall, at the end of “Yellowstone” Season 3. During the beginning of Season 4, fans had a brief moment of hope that maybe Jamie and his dad could live out their lives in peace on this new ranch Jamie bought.
He could succeed as Attorney General and pursue his cowboying dreams on the side. He could become closer with Garrett than he ever was with John. And he could focus on the start of his own family, with Christina and their son. But all of those dreams went to hell the moment Kayce walked in and asked Jamie to start digging into the Dutton attacks.
Jamie eventually found out that Garrett ordered the attacks on the Duttons. Here he was again, caught between two worlds, in a lose-lose situation. He could either lose his biological or adopted family, with no way to save them both. This season of “Yellowstone” just proves once again that Jamie will never truly be happy because he constantly has to choose between the different sides of himself.
Based on Episode 6, it looks like he chose Garrett over the Dutttons. But will his choice last? We’ll have to wait until next Sunday to find out.
