‘Yellowstone’ Star Josh Lucas Will Battle a Shark in Upcoming Movie

“Yellowstone” star Josh Lucas goes from cowboy to shark-fighting oilman in his latest survival thriller film, “The Black Demon.”

Variety announced the new film Wednesday, with Lucas as the lead. “Yellowstone” fans might know Lucas as the actor who plays the younger John Dutton in flashback sequences. He also starred in “Lilly,” “The Forever Purge,” “Ford v Ferrari,” and “Undertow” previously. And of course, die-hard fans recognize him as the iconic Jake Perry from “Sweet Home Alabama,” starring opposite of Reese Witherspoon.

Now, Lucas’s latest film takes him from ranching and Southern roots to sci-fi ocean thriller. Here’s the official synopsis for “The Black Demon,” which showrunners hope will hit theaters sometime in 2023.

“The film follows oilman Paul Sturges (Lucas) as he takes his family on vacation to Bahia Azul. There, the coastal town he and his wife once knew has mysteriously crumbled and the locals are nowhere to be found. Paul starts off his day with a routine visit to inspect his nearby oil rig, but before he knows it, his entire family has landed with him on the rotting metal tower. From the depths of the ocean rises a massive megalodon known only by its name: the Black Demon. Under constant threat from this primeval species of shark, Paul must find a way to get his family back to shore alive.”

Sounds terrifying and exciting. It’ll be interesting to see the “Yellowstone” star in that kind of role, fighting off an ancient shark. “The Black Demon” is sure to join the rank of other classic shark films like “Jaws” and “The Meg.”

Variety reports that Lucas and the rest of the crew should start filming in the Dominican Republic around December. The showrunner already can’t wait to start working on the survival thriller film.

Filmmakers Hype Up Shark Film Featuring ‘Yellowstone’ Star Josh Lucas

“The Black Demon” will be directed by “Rambo: Last Blood” director Adrian Grunberg. Aside from “Yellowstone” star Josh Lucas, we don’t know who else will star in the film alongside him.

Javier Chapa, Jon Silk, Petr Jákl will produce the film. Highland Film Group will co-finance it and represent its rights. Highland’s CEO Arianne Fraser spoke with Variety about what to expect from the film.

“Survival thrillers centered on the apex predator of the ocean have captivated audiences for generations, and to have this fresh take helmed by the action master Adrian [Grunberg] and led by the incredibly talented Josh [Lucas], makes ‘The Black Demon’ a truly exciting project,” Fraser said.

“We think audiences around the world will be excited to see this Mexican legend on the big screen for the first time,” Chapa added.

We can’t wait to see the “Yellowstone” star in action for this exciting new film. Hopefully, he still makes time to play young John Dutton in the occasional flashback scene, though.
