There are many things to admire about Kevin Costner’s work in “Yellowstone,” where he plays seventh-generation rancher John Dutton. But star Kelly Reilly revealed one thing in particular that draws her to his performance.
Reilly recently sat down with Looper to talk about the show and her character, Beth. At one point, the conversation shifted to what it’s like working with Costner, who’s a film and television icon. The interviewer asked if Costner ever gave Reilly advice about the industry or life lessons in general.
“I think I’m a bit old for that,” Reilly revealed. “He doesn’t sit me down and give me advice. I mean, not directly.”
She added, “But I pay attention to how he plays a scene. And how he works through the scenes and how he holds his ground and his space. I admire that in him. I admire his stillness as an actor. It’s things like that that he teaches me inadvertently. But no, he’s not sitting me down, giving me lessons.”
It’s interesting that she points out Costner’s ability to be “still” in “Yellowstone.” Recently, the show’s Twitter page posted a video showing off John’s “brooding skills” while looking into the fire. In that scene, which aired this past week, Costner definitely uses that stillness to add a sense of gravitas to his character.
And Reilly raises a fair point about how she learns lessons from him too. Both “Yellowstone” stars have been working in the industry for decades at this point. It would be a bit insulting to Reilly if Costner presumed to give her advice when she’s an accomplished actor in her own right. But if she decided to pick up tips and tricks from watching him work, then that’s her prerogative.

During the two-hour “Yellowstone” premiere on Nov. 7, fans saw a scene where Beth confronts Bob Schwartz, her former boss who basically left her out to dry while Beth held off Market Equities.
Beth warns him she’ll make him pay for abandoning her, but Bob tells her, “Schwartz & Meyer owns half the land on the north side of the Yellowstone. You shouldn’t pick a fight with the bigger bear, Beth.”
To which Beth responds, “You co-own the land. You gotta read the fine print, Bob. I’m the bigger bear.”
At the time, some fans were confused by what she meant by the bigger bear. They posted the question in a Reddit thread, where one fan revealed, “She did something in the fine print that made her the majority owner of the land. How exactly she did it and what percentage she owns has yet to be revealed.”
Count on Beth Dutton to trust no one but herself. In this case, her caution paid off. And we can’t wait to see how she becomes an even bigger bear next.
