“Yellowstone” fans finally got the showdown they’ve been waiting for between John Dutton and Garrett Randall this past episode.
WARNING: “Yellowstone” Season 4 spoilers below!
The two fathers ran into each other at a local diner, where we learn that they haven’t seen each other since a judge sentenced Garrett to life in prison. This conversation quickly turns interesting when Garrett accuses John of not telling the judge the full truth about what Jamie’s mother “had become.”
But John quickly retorts that Garrett turned Jamie’s mother into a drug addict and “killed her for it.” Looks like there’s little love between them 30 years later, even after John raised Garrett’s son for him.
The whole scene left “Yellowstone” viewers on the edge of their seats, wondering if Garrett would ever reveal that he ordered the hit on the Duttons. But the moment doesn’t come, with John exiting the diner after giving his Salisbury steak to Garrett. “You never know which meal will be your last,” John says ominously.
Though John and Garrett clearly hate each other, “Yellowstone” stars Kevin Costner and Will Patton only have the greatest respect for one another. In a recent Twitter clip called “Behind the Story,” Costner opened up about working with Patton on set.
“It was good to see Will on the set,” Costner said. “He’s just a fantastic actor and brings so much. He’s very dynamic in his own way, formidable and detailed.”
Considering how it’s easy to hate Garrett for his actions but love his relationship with Jamie, we totally understand Costner’s praise.
‘Yellowstone’ Stars Open Up about Jamie, John, and Garrett
During the featurette “Behind the Story,” several “Yellowstone” stars discussed the complicated dynamic between Jamie, John Dutton, and Garrett Randall. For all intents and purposes, it seems like Garrett is the only one really supporting Jamie now. But his past actions definitely color the kind of example he’s setting for Jamie.
“[Jamie’s] natural-born father, he’s a complicated person. But he’s a threat,” Kevin Costner explained. “For Jamie, there’s this chance to find his center. But it’s a person that’s of a low character.”
Jamie certainly doesn’t see it that way though. If anything, he sees his adoptive father as a person of “low character.” Especially given how John continues to undermine him week after week.
This past episode, Jamie watched news coverage of John rescuing a diner from armed robbers. The coverage paints him as a hero and reminds Jamie how hard it will be to beat John for the governorship.
“This is yet another moment to remind him of embarrassments and inadequacies,” Wes Bentley, the actor who plays Jamie, said. “It just feels like John has now turned into Enemy No. 1 for Jamie.”
Make sure you tune into the season finale of “Yellowstone” this Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, to find out what John, Jamie, and Garrett do next.
