When he’s not handling business on the ranch amidst the sweeping mountains of Montana as John Dutton on “Yellowstone,” Kevin Costner is right on the coastline of sparkling California waters.
Costner lives on the coast of Santa Barbara alongside his wife, Christine Baumgartner, as well as his three children.
Kevin Costner and Santa Barbara
He had grown up in California. On January 18, 1955, he was born in Lynwood. However, he grew up in Compton. His parents weren’t exceptionally wealthy. His father was an electrician and eventually got a job as a utility executive. Costner’s mother was a welfare worker.
Costner was forced to move a lot as a child, which meant he was constantly starting over. He went from Ventura to Visalia to Orange County.
Through all this, Costner had gotten to know California, and a lot of it.
“It turns out I have more than I could ever dream of. This is a place that spoke out loud to me. To be on the water with my children and my wife,” Costner said in an interview with Visit California.
Although he had not lived in Santa Barbara as a child, it was still somewhere he had distinct memories of growing up.
“I knew about Santa Barbara when I was a kid, I used to actually hate Santa Barbara because I lived in a town next to it called Ventura so we played them in sports… One day I kind of got past that and thought what a great place to live,” Kevin Costner said.
Between the beautiful beaches and high-end shopping and restaurants, Santa Barbara has a lot to offer. In fact, celebrities like Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah Winfrey are just a few of the celebrities that call Santa Barbara home.
Costner’s Colorado Ranch
While he may enjoy the crystal clear waters and beach life, Costner is also a mountain man.
He owns a home in Aspen, Colorado, amidst the sweeping mountain ranges and wide-open land called Dunbar Ranch. It’s named after his character from “Dances With Wolves.”
It is a 160-acre ranch with three different properties — the main house, lake house, and a river house. The property also has an ice rink, tubing track, dog sledding, and is a 10-minute journey away from Aspen activities. There is also the opportunity to hike, fish, and explore on horseback at the property.
One of the most interesting additions to the home is a personal baseball field where Costner continues to channel his inner “Fields of Dreams” and “Bull Durham” lifestyle.
According to Travel + Leisure, Costner actually rents out his ranch to people for $36,000 a night. It’s certainly not a small sum, but the activities and celebrity status make it that much more of a hot commodity. Also, most people bring a huge group of friends and split the price to make it far less daunting.
Costner still frequently visits his Colorado ranch, but is often busy shooting different TV shows and movies.
