Cole Hauser is as much an outdoorsman as his “Yellowstone” character Rip Wheeler. For Hauser, there’s no acting involved when it comes to his love for the outdoors and nature.
Besides posing for a shirtless photo in People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” issue, Hauser also reflected on his childhood. He’s known how to ride a horse since he was a kid. The actor grew up in Santa Barbara, California and in Oregon where he spent his childhood on a ranch riding horses. He remembered fondly his horse Cinnamon he used to ride as well.
“[I would be] cruising around with cows and all kinds of different animals that we had,” Hauser said. “My mom would ring the dinner bell and the horse that I used to have Cinnamon, he’d come up and drop his head and I’d just slide down his mane and ride into the house. So I’ve always been outdoors.”

Hauser’s passion for all things nature extended into adulthood and his career. He also reflected on roughing it for a Costa Rica trip with his friends. The group almost never went inside, preferring the fresh air and open space of the outdoors. Even when he imagines future retirement, he envisions himself on an island with his wife Cynthia.
For the past few months, Hauser has been on the set of “Yellowstone” in Montana filming Season Four. Whether Hauser returns to the show for Season Five remains to be seen. Hauser said he enjoys sitting and watching the sunrise while in Montana.
“My favorite time of day is sunset and sunrise. Especially up here,” he said. “I don’t know if you can see these mountains behind us, but the sun basically comes right over this and over the Yellowstone ranch. And it goes right behind these mountains here into Trapper Peak. And it’s just to die for. I mean, the magic hour here is just stunning.”
It’s not hard to see why Hauser and his character Rip Wheeler have become a favorite among “Yellowstone” fans. Hauser embodies that Outsider spirit of being curious towards and one with nature.
