On Monday, PEOPLE shared a behind-the-scenes look at Cole Hauser, a star of “Yellowstone,” in his upcoming “Change of Scenery” portfolio that is featured in this year’s Sexiest Man Alive issue.

The actor, who portrays Rip Wheeler in “Yellowstone,” posed for the photoshoot in the same water trough that character Beth Dutton made famous in an unforgettable scene from Season 1.

Hauser said he’s used to the outdoors and not having proper showers, so being shot in the trough was fine with him.

“I did a trip with a few buddies of mine in Costa Rica and we actually never went inside and had a proper shower,” Hauser said. “I’m pretty accustomed to it. It’s refreshing and especially if the water temperature is right, it’s just beautiful.”

The actor spent his early years in Santa Barbara, CA and in Oregon on a ranch. He says his childhood consisted of riding horses, and tending to cows and many other animals on the ranch.

“My mom would ring the dinner bell. And the horse that I used to have, Cinnamon, he’d come up and drop his head and I’d just slide down his mane and ride into the house. So I’ve always been outdoors,” Hauser explained.

Hauser Talks Pandemic and the Importance of Family

Hauser opened up about the struggles of filming “Yellowstone” and being away from his family for months at a time. He says the COVID-19 pandemic taught him to take advantage of his time with his wife, Cynthia, and their three children.

“It’s been a little rough over the last couple of years because I’m away for five months at a time. It’s not easy to parent from afar,” Hauser explains. “Steely is an absolute pistol, and they’re great boys. When I’m away they kind of take over, making sure that mom and Steely are watched over. That’s how I raised them and I’m proud of them for that.”

Additionally, the actor touched on prioritizing his relationship with his wife, who is also a former actress.

“We’ve been together for 25 years,” Hauser said of his marriage. “Through so many wonderful ups and downs as relationships do. We’ve stayed strong together and just battled through everything and still love each other.”

Furthermore, he says he plans on slowing things down in the future, and stepping away from Hollywood.

The actor hopes to be “sitting on a beach with my wife, kids will be out of the house, and we’ll have a nice little island somewhere,” says Hauser. “We’re just going to have our feet up, boat kind of out in the ocean, nothing too crazy. Just enjoying the second half of our life.”
