‘Yellowstone’ TV: Cole Hauser Thinks Show Offers Best Look at Montana Since One Hollywood Blockbuster

by Jon D. B.

“When’s the last time you saw Montana like this?” The man behind Rip Wheeler dishes on Yellowstone‘s pitch-perfect portrayal of Montana.

Even in the beginning, Cole Hauser recalls thinking Yellowstone had “a great chance of being something special.” With a hat tip to Kevin Costner, then close co-stars Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, and of course Beth Dutton’s Kelly Reilly, the Rip Wheeler actor says he’s “not that surprised” at the success of Yellowstone given the “amazing work” of his peers.

“Taylor’s writing fantastic characters,” Hauser adds for this excellent sit-down with entertainment trade HeyUGuys from 2020. “I think it’s fresh and new.”

On that same front, Hauser credits the show’s creator, writer, and director, Taylor Sheridan, with bringing Westerns back to television in a way no one else could. Specifically, he’s placing the spotlight back on Montana.

“As far as the topography and place… When’s the last time you saw Montana [like this]?” Hauser says of Sheridan’s incredible showcasing of the state.

For the actor, no Hollywood project has done Montana as proud since “A River Runs Through It with Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt.”

Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) is interviewed by Scott Davis for Yellowstone Season 3. The Paramount Network shows is led by Kevin Costner. The show was created by Taylor Sheridan, whose previous work includes the critically acclaimed films Wind River, Hell or High Water and Sicario.

“I think Taylor’s talked about some really relevant subject matters that are happening here in America,” Hauser adds. Which puts the spotlight again on Taylor Sheridan, the show’s mastermind, as having an excellent grip on both Montana’s landscape and the issues it holds at the core of America.

“He’s a dual threat!” the actor says. “He’s obviously a great storyteller; a great writer. He knows how to develop his characters. But I think a lot of the actors have come in and brought stuff to the table.”

‘Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser on Showcasing Montana

Following another hat-tip to his co-stars, Hauser gives a huge shout-out to one man who’s work went incredibly far in showcasing Montana.

“Ben Richardson… He’s a phenomenal VP. He captured the West! I don’t think anyone’s done it [as well] for 20… 30 years.”

In the end, Cole Hauser says there is “no better person” to write these sort of characters than Sheridan – and no better person to film then than Richardson.

On Sheridan’s half, Hauser adds that Yellowstone‘s creative leader “knows so much about stuff that… Nobody knows about – that he’s researched or been a part of. Whether it’s down in Texas or Montana or Wyoming or Idaho or Utah… I mean he’s just one of those guys who loves a wealth of knowledge when it come to the modern West and the old West.”
