Fans of “Yellowstone” are calling out one particular style of clothing that the TV series is lacking. It’s not the lack of cowboy hats and boots. As a matter of fact, some viewers are completely enthralled with the western-style clothing that the cowboys of the Dutton ranch wear.

But it’s not the lack of western wear that one fan is calling out. It’s actually the deficit of camouflage clothing that is not seen on the show.

“There is a serious lack of people wearing camo jackets or shirts given the rural setting this takes place in,” shares this “Yellowstone” viewer on Reddit.

While this might be true, some fans of the western, mafia-like drama are chiming in with their thoughts. According to some, they have firsthand experiences.

“Not necessarily…..I’m from the area. Wealthy ranchers don’t tend to wear a lot of camo,” this poster writes. “Camo is def [sic] a hunting/fishing thing and there’s a scene where they are fishing and all camo’d up. But farmers/ranchers aren’t necessarily daily camo wearers. More like wranglers and button down work shirts.”

As the photo above shows, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his son, Kayce (Luke Grimes) are wearing camo. However, they are taking Tate (Brecken Merrill), Kayce’s son, hunting. This is really one of the only scenes that some of the characters are wearing camouflage.

“I live in Montana and no one really wears camo unless they’re going hunting,” comments this person from reported firsthand experience.

‘Yellowstone’ Wardrobe Carefully Curated

The “Yellowstone” characters are typically wearing western work shirts and vests or jackets. The choice in clothing is most of the time a functional one, not a fashion one.

As a matter of fact, Academy Award winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter creates each character’s signature looks.

“Cowboys wear western wear but they wear it with a little bit more of an urban flair. A little bit of a hip-hop flair. We’re combining a lot of things. The old west meets the new west,” said Carter.

The wardrobe for “Yellowstone” is carefully thought out and curated by Carter and her team. She especially touches on two pieces of signature clothing that fans have come to love.

First up, Kevin Costner’s John Dutton jacket. “We made him the old-style 70s ski coat which was popular amongst the western dress,” she says.

Then, she and her team know that looking the part is paramount. That’s why they’ve created a variety of pieces for Luke Grime’s Kayce Dutton.

“We have one clean and we have several that are dirty,” said Carter about the jacket. “Things just kind of go through a process of aging and breaking down.”
