“Yellowstone” had become quite a popular show by the end of Season 3 last year. The season premiere broke records with 6.5 million total viewers, and the season finale drew in 7.6 million total viewers.
So what are all those fans doing with their downtime as they wait for Season 4?
Well, some of them have hopped on Reddit. And they’re tossing out ideas for spin-offs they’d like to see.
Fans Float Young Lloyd Spinoff Idea
Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) as a young man is a popular spin-off idea. Lloyd is one of the longest-serving ranch hands at the Dutton ranch, and he was around to witness quite a bit of the show’s backstory.
A Lloyd spinoff could cover a lot of explanatory ground. For example, fans said they’d like to learn more about the history of the Wade Morrow (Boots Southerland) dispute.
That’s a Season 3 plotline – Morrow wears the Yellowstone brand but turned bad at some point, and yet managed not to get taken to “the train station” (i.e. killed). His time at the ranch overlapped with Lloyd’s ascent.
A young Lloyd spinoff could also delve into the story Lloyd told Jimmy when Jimmy landed in the hospital for his rodeo efforts. Lloyd told him John Dutton (Kevin Costner) also discouraged Lloyd from pursuing a rodeo career when he was a young man.
And a young Lloyd show could cover Rip’s early years. Lloyd was there when Dutton found young Rip on his property, coated in dirt and blood.
The Dutton Clan: The Yellowstone Early Years
Another idea floated is a spinoff featuring a young John Dutton and his father. That spinoff could also feature the Dutton kids as youngsters. And it would give some insight into why Dutton is so hell-bent on keeping every inch of his ranch – even at the cost of the epic Season 3 finale showdown that could see his land seized and parceled out over his objections.
Or perhaps a spinoff starring John Dutton’s grandfather and Chairman Rainwater’s grandfather. The ranch and the reservation have coexisted for generations. But what was their coexistence like before the ranch – and the Dutton political influence – were so firmly planted there?
Plus, a look into Dutton’s past could show us how he met his wife Evelyn (Gretchen Mol). Maybe we would get to see a different side of her than the side that was so cruel to Beth (Kelly Reilly) and so blatantly favoring Kayce (Luke Grimes) over her other children.
Besides throwing out ideas, fans also pointedly suggested that a spin-off shouldn’t eclipse the show itself. “Yellowstone” in all its original glory is, after all, the reason they’re posting on Reddit in the first place.
