‘Yellowstone’ TV: How Cole Hauser Describes Kevin Costner’s Legendary Career Making ‘Iconic Films’

by Megan Molseed

The dynamic between John Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s relationship on “Yellowstone” may be complicated to viewers of the hit Paramount television series. However, the connection between the two actors that portray the “Yellowstone” ranchers is one of great admiration. The admiration is especially apparent as Cole Hauser, who portrays Rip Wheeler on “Yellowstone,” speaks of his co-star and on-screen boss.

As we first meet Rip Wheeler on “Yellowstone,” we learn that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) has taken the boy in when he needed shelter. There is a deep relationship between the two. However, John Dutton always falls just short of giving Rip the father-son relationship he clearly craves.

As the series progresses, we learn that Rip came to join the Duttons at the “Yellowstone” ranch after he murdered his father in self-defense. A young Rip had hit his father on the head, killing him, after the father killed Rip’s mother and his only brother.

A ‘Yellowstone’ Fan Favorite: Rip and Beth

Rip Wheeler and John Dutton’s daughter, Beth, have a complicated romantic relationship to further complicate matters.

Rip has always had a soft spot for Beth ever since he arrived at the Dutton’s ranch. And, the attraction has mostly been mutual. Over the years, the couple has encountered bad times along with the good. But, they are always drawn to each other.

The dynamic between the two “Yellowstone” characters is certainly complicated. But, says Hauser, his relationship with Kevin Costner is anything but.

“He’s somebody I’ve been watching from afar since (I was) a young man,” Cole Hauser said of his “Yellowstone” costar during a 2020 interview with HeyUGuys. Costner also serves as a producer and director on the hit Paramount series.

Hauser Has Been a Longtime Fan Of Costner

“I’ve watched all his films,” Hauser continued. The “Yellowstone” star also noted that Costner’s Hollywood career has been an iconic one.

During his career, Kevin Costner has starred in some Hollywood heavyweights such as “The Feild of Dreams,” “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves,” “Untouchables,” “Dances With Wolves,” and “JFK.” The Hollywood icon has also produced more than twenty films and television shows such as “Wyatt Earp,” “The Bodyguard,” and of course, “Yellowstone.”

“He’s in his own right one of the better storytellers in American cinema I think,” Hauser said of Costner. However, added the actor, his iconic stature in Hollywood isn’t what makes his costar such a wonderful person.

“He’s a wonderful human being,” Hauser said of Costner. “When I think of him first I think of him as just a good guy who actually cares about his craft.”

Hauser added that he still looks up to the iconic “Yellowstone” star even this far into his own acting career.

“I still love to look up at a great guy like Kevin and go ‘wow!'” exclaimed the”Yellowstone” actor. “He’s as dedicated or more than anybody I’ve met.”
