‘Yellowstone’ TV: How the Fate of the Ranch May Come Down to Jamie Dutton in Season 4

by Jennifer Shea

In the “Yellowstone” Season 3 finale, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) faced off against the family he had just learned was his adoptive one. Specifically, he challenged John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) over the future of the ranch. As the season-ending attacks unfolded, John and Beth had just sworn they’d stop Jamie from selling off the Duttons’ land to Market Equities.

Now one fan has a novel theory about how the survival of the ranch may, counterintuitively, come down to Jamie in the end. And he or she thinks Jamie will come around and make the right choice when it really counts, the fan said on Reddit recently.

“I spent the past week binge watching Yellowstone and I am obsessed. I can’t wait to season 4! One of the characters I’m most intrigued by is Jamie,” the fan posted. The fan went on to say that he or she believes John and Beth would likely be “in some sort of a coma” next season. And, due to Beth filing legal paperwork in the wrong state, Jamie will still be in charge of the estate.

“This will put Jamie in the position to either sell or keep the ranch,” the fan suggested. “I think he’ll confront his real dad about the attacks and find out that he did or didn’t play a part but we’ll also find out that Jamie is blood related to the Duttons. Finding this out will cause Jamie to save the ranch.”

‘Yellowstone’ Stars Offer No Spoilers

But if fans were hoping to get an inkling of what happens next from the show’s stars, they have so far been disappointed. In interviews, the actors playing the protagonists have been pretty tight-lipped about what Season 4 will bring.

For example, take Reilly. She told Screen Rant earlier this year that she’s not allowed to give any clues about how the Season 3 cliffhanger resolves itself. She’s not even allowed to say whether she appears in Season 4.

“I’m not allowed to really say too much about whether or not I’m part of Season 4. In fact, I’m not allowed to say anything,” Reilly said. “But what I can say is that Season 4 has been shot, and that it’s wonderful what happens. I will say that. It’s really mind-blowing and big and extravagant, and Taylor Sheridan came back. He writes every script, and he directed a bunch of them again, so I know it’s bigger than ever.”

And Costner has not been much help, either. In a December interview with Good Day New York, the “Yellowstone” star was not offering up any hints about Season 4. He even demurred when asked whether his character would be back for another season.

“I can’t say,” Costner replied. “There’s an ending that you’re gonna see. Hopefully it’s a powerful one for you.”

“I try to make things, and be a part of things, that have a dramatic arc to them,” he added. “So just try to enjoy it right up to the end, if you can.”

Hopefully “Yellowstone” fans enjoy suspense. Because there’s been a lot of it ever since Season 3 ended. And now, with questions lingering over the Season 4 premiere date, there’s even more of it to go around.
