“Yellowstone” stars Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley have spent a fair amount of time together on screen, usually in antagonistic situations. But that doesn’t mean that the two behave like that when the cameras turn off.
The whole cast of the show seems to act like one big family, but Bentley talked about Reilly, in particular, being a “sweet” person. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Bentley mentioned how he doesn’t feel quite as “intimidated” by Reilly as his character Jamie does of Reilly’s character Beth.
“Well, Kelly herself, not at all. She is one of the sweetest people and sweetest actors,” Bentley told the outlet. “She has to go so far to get to Beth, she does an amazing job. It’s great to watch her.”
The “Yellowstone” star went on to talk about how the two have to structure their scenes, then to be believable. Fans of the show know that Beth and Jamie clash more than almost anyone. Beth’s made it her personal mission to make Jamie’s life hell after Jamie knowingly helped her become infertile. Jamie’s also betrayed the Duttons before, something that Beth refuses to let happen again.
“She’s very intimidating as Beth, though. I get worked up for these scenes, and then she delivers,” Bentley continued. “But we’re very close; we trust each other. That’s how we get those things done.”
Trust is key between actors. Especially ones who are working together in complex scenes like Reilly and Bentley. Often, these scenes involve physical violence too, which definitely demands a level of trust between two people.
‘Yellowstone’ Star Kelly Reilly Opens Up About What It’s Like Playing Beth
Earlier this month, “Yellowstone” star Kelly Reilly sat down with Looper to talk all about Season 4 and her character Beth. At one point, Reilly opened up about what makes it so “fun” to play Beth on screen.
“Well, she’s so brilliantly written,” Reilly said. “There’s not a line that she says that I don’t love. She’s a bit of a fantasy of all the things that you want to say, but you’d never have the courage to say or do.”
It’s a fair point. Looking at Beth’s track record this season and in previous “Yellowstone” seasons, she has several iconic and memorable quotes. But for the sweet Reilly, it’s also nice to explore a side of herself that she never really has before. And a side that she wishes she explored more often.
“So, there is an aspect of fantasy of when I read her like, I wish I could have a bit of Beth in me to be able to say some of those things … and I get to be able to do that,” Reilly said. “So, to be able to do that and get to do it with all those great lines, it’s just so satisfying.”
It’s as satisfying for viewers at home as it must be for Reilly during filming. It certainly helps that Reilly connects to her “Yellowstone” character so much.
“I love her so much. I’ve been playing her now for four years,” Reilly concluded. “She’s become one of the dearest characters I’ve ever played. She feels very real to me. It’s equal parts fun and equal parts deeply challenging and terrifying to play sometimes.”
