‘Yellowstone’ TV: Is Jamie Dutton Still the Most Misunderstood Character on the Series

by Thad Mitchell

In the absence of our favorite show, a little “Yellowstone” discussion helps to pass the time until a brand new season arrives.

No one is quite sure when that will be, but the premiere of “Yellowstone” season four is drawing near. In the meantime, theories, speculation, and debate regarding the show are prevalent across the internet. A recent Reddit post seeks to spark discussion on one of the show’s primary characters — Jamie Dutton.

Of all the characters residing on Yellowstone Ranch, Jamie may be the most misunderstood of them all. Watchers of the hit Paramount Network aren’t exactly sure where Jamie fits in or what his next move will be. He’s certainly been put through the wringer in the show’s first three seasons. The exciting part about Jamie is there is a multitude of ways that he could go in as we enter into a new season. As “Yellowstone” fans continue to note, Jamie Dutton is one of the most complex characters to appear in the modern western drama.

“I think Jamie has always been conflicted with himself,” a Reddit user states. “He wants to please John but he also wants to establish himself as an individual. He wants to help the ranch but he also wants his own success and power. Once he finds out he is adopted he only cares about himself and how he can benefit financially from it.”

This statement is well said to say the least. The following video provides a little background on how the portraying actor shapes Jamie into a “Yellowstone” wild card.

‘Yellowstone’ Most Complex Character

Veteran actor Wes Bentley plays Jamie Dutton to near perfection, making him somewhat of a loose cannon. He is loyal to his father, John Dutton, but the two men rarely see eye-to-eye on political matters. Jamie is an aspiring politician who does his best to balance his own interest versus those of his “Yellowstone” family. His sister, Beth Dutton, hates his guts — to put it mildly. Their feud dates back to when they were just kids. Seeking to terminate an unplanned pregnancy, a young Beth turns to Jamie. Upon completion of the procedure, Beth is sterilized, leaving her unable to bear children. Jamie’s best relationship within his family is with his brother, Kayce Dutton.

“Yellowstone” threw us a big-time curveball last season in revealing that Jamie was adopted as an infant. He seeks out and finds his biological father, Garrett Randall, who seemingly suggests he kill his adopted father and take over the ranch.

It is easy to see why Jamie is so misunderstood. It is hard to see where his allegiance lies heading into the fourth season. Is he behind the attacks on the Dutton family at the end of the previous season? He is certainly a prime suspect in the mind of “Yellowstone” fans.

The million dollar question is “What does Jamie do next?”

From this vantage point, we are going to suggest that Jamie is not behind the attacks on his adopted family. We believe in season four that we will Jamie work to earn back the family’s trust and respect. Jamie is many things, but above all, he is super intelligent. The smart play here is to get back in the good graces of his family.
