“Which one are you?” asks Yellowstone Monday with one of the series’ best quotes, courtesy of the one and only Lloyd Pierce.
“You’re either born a willow – or your born an oak. That’s all there is to it.”
There it is. By far this author and Yellowstone fan‘s favorite Lloyd quote, it also serves as one of the best in the entire series. The show’s official Instagram is highlighting the quote once more Monday, too, with a clip that never gets old.
Since we’re still waiting on Season 4, one of Lloyd’s most recent and powerful interactions remains this moment with Monica Dutton in Season 3:
Such a fantastic line. It’s an endlessly quotable one-liner that feels straight out of the Westerns of old. And this is no accident, either.
Through the Western-living eyes of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, Outsider’s favorite show remains as true-to-life as it can. Within such a high-stakes, neo-reality Western, that is. A practicing cowboy and horsemaster himself, Sheridan has made it a point throughout the show’s production to hire on real-life cowboys for roles in front of and behind the camera, while crafting dialogue that feels as true-to-character as possible.
While some actors (like lead Kevin Costner) have decades of equestrian experience, others are absolute, true-to-life cowboys. And that’s where American treasure Forrie J. Smith comes in.
Smith, the actor behind ranch hand Lloyd, is perfect for the role. His dialogue delivery rings true because, well, it is true. Smith is a real life cowboy, rancher, and horsemaster, and has been all of the above since he was but 6-years-old. A long-time Hollywood stuntman and actor, too, Yellowstone is Smith’s first series regular role, and we love the show for bringing him into such a prominent place in pop culture.
Many of ‘Yellowstone’s Bes Quotes come from Lloyd Pierce
Alongside creator Taylor Sheridan, the show’s writers craft some of the best dialogue on modern television. There have been a few swings and misses, sure (with certain characters getting the short end of the stick – see: poor Monica). But to say Lloyd has escaped these to garner some of Yellowstone‘s best quotes would be an understatement.
As such, it feels perfectly pertinent to give a look back at Lloyd Pierce’s best lines ahead of his Season 4 return. So as the cowboy himself says: “Pray like hell, and hold on.”
- “Pray like hell, and hold on.”
- “Rough business becoming a man, ain’t it? Beats the alternative, though…”
- “It’s the shame that hurts the most, you know? But shame, it’s in the mind. You can turn that faucet off whenever you want to.”
- “You know, you did something that no one does, Rip. You’ve outlived your past.”
- “Mechanical bulls are for drunk chicks at the county fair. If you’re gonna rodeo, you need to find out if you’ve got the stomach for it now.”
- “She’s old enough to vote and buy bullets. Don’t blame me for her bad judgment.”
