“Yellowstone” fans are at it again, debating away about loose plot threads and the Season 3 finale. Their latest discussion concerns the ring that Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) took from his mother’s grave to give to Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).

In a new Reddit thread, “Yellowstone” fans were about evenly divided on the question of that particular scene. Some said it was unnecessary and that Beth’s ring would now be cursed. Others saw it as a touching symbolic act demonstrating Rip’s love.

Still, as one fan pointed out, it’s undeniable that a lot of bad things befell the Duttons right after Rip took the ring from his mother’s dead hand.

Does the Ring Portend Bad Luck for the Duttons in Season 4 of ‘Yellowstone’?

One “Yellowstone” fan kicked the thread off by wondering about Rip’s decision. What does it augur for his marriage to Beth?

“WHAT would possess Rip to give Beth his Mother’s ring, when it was given to her by the husband who murdered her and her son?” the fan asked. “I am not understanding the writers thought process on that. The ring would be tainted and super bad luck for their marriage – would it not? I could understand if he dug up mom for Grandma’s ring… but it doesn’t make sense to disturb the dead for a ring that was not (in my opinion) a symbol of love.”

It’s true that Rip’s mother’s marriage ended in blood-soaked tragedy, as we see in one flashback scene earlier on in the series. But Rip had a soft spot for his mother. And Beth could afford to buy herself a very expensive ring. That ring in particular may hold a priceless significance for her.

“I don’t think it matters to him who gave it to her, but the fact that it was hers,” another fan explained. “He only had one loving and endearing person and that was his mother. And now with Beth he has found love in a partner.”

“It doesnt matter,” yet another fan agreed. “It was his MOTHERS ring and he loved her more than anything.”

That ring certainly illustrates the lengths Rip is willing to go to for Beth. But will the gesture be counterbalanced by bad luck? And how will Beth react to it? Will she even live to see it?

Was the Grave Scene Necessary?

Other “Yellowstone” fans jumped in to agree that the ring would be bad luck. They said agreed that disturbing the dead for the object was a poorly thought-out move.

“Couldn’t agree more,” one fan wrote. “Don’t give me your murder ring, sir.”

“That scene was weird as f— and not needed,” another fan chimed in.

Yet another fan said that it was a weird thing for Rip to do, but “only Beth would wear such a thing.”

As a matter of fact, it’s hard to imagine Rip in a Tiffany store, browsing the wares for a wedding ring. “Yellowstone” fans have previously debated whether Rip dug up his mother to get the ring because he couldn’t afford to buy a ring for Beth. But that probably misses the point of the gesture.

Beth is Rip’s only known vice, and he lives a relatively frugal life. So he has no gambling debts or other big expenses draining his savings. It’s likely Rip just sees the ring as a symbol of his fierce love for Beth. The question is, does she survive to wear it?

There’s only one way to find out. And with Season 4 of “Yellowstone” scheduled to kick off sometime this summer, likely in June, fans don’t have much longer to wait.
