The official “Yellowstone” Instagram account is showcasing an intense photo of “the Dutton legacy,” Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill).

“The Dutton legacy. #YellowstoneTV,” the caption on the photo reads.

Tate has played a larger role in John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) life as the show has progressed. When “Yellowstone” began, Dutton was barely speaking to his son Kayce (Luke Grimes), Tate’s father, and so Dutton hardly ever got to see the boy. Then, as things heated up between the Dutton clan and the Reservation, Kayce decided to move his family to the Dutton ranch, where they’d be safer.

But not long after they made the move, Tate got snatched by associates of the Beck Brothers, Dutton’s ruthless archrivals. Tracking him down required all the ranch’s resources and all of Dutton’s wiles. Unfortunately, the experience left some scars, with Tate plagued by nightmares upon his return. As Season 3 ends, little Tate is approaching adolescence, and his father and grandfather are facing potentially lethal threats.

Tate Actor Brecken Merrill Is a Fan of Westerns

Actor Brecken Merrill, who plays Tate on “Yellowstone,” took to Instagram recently to praise Westerns. He pointed out an article in the Wall Street Journal on Hollywood’s newfound love of Westerns, and added, “Of course, we already knew westerns are the BEST!”

Merrill has drawn quite a fan following on Instagram, with over 20,700 followers on his account. But his account is also managed by his mother, at least while he’s still growing up.

Many fans chimed in to agree with Merrill’s take. Some praised the scenes featuring Costner and Merrill as grandfather and grandson. Others told Merrill he is “very talented.”

Merrill’s ‘Yellowstone’ Co-Stars Are Fans of His Work

Indeed, Merrill’s co-stars seem to agree with that assessment.

“I’ve worked with kids in the past that are tough,” Grimes said in a behind-the-scenes video from the Paramount Network. “It’s hard, you know, to keep them on track, or keep them focused. And he’s actually really good.”

“He’s amazing,” said Kelsey Asbille, who plays Monica, Tate’s mother. “And he has so much fun… My scenes with him are probably my favorite.”

Merrill clearly also appreciates the scenes he shares with Academy Award winner Costner. In January, Merrill took to Instagram again to post an image on film from one of Tate’s moments together with John Dutton. The moment, when Tate names his horse, is one of those quiet bonding moments that require sensitive delivery of relatively few lines.

All signs suggest Merrill enjoys the work and wants to continue acting. He stars in the upcoming film “We All Got to Dance,” about a town in Washington during the Vietnam War. And if his Instagram account is any guide, he will also be appearing in Season 4 of “Yellowstone,” set to air sometime this summer.
