“Yeah, for 40 years I had a really good time smoking.” ‘Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner gave marijuana more than the ol’ college try before deciding he wasn’t in it for the long haul.
What an understatement of an opener, too. If you haven’t associated Kevin Costner with weed before this article – you will now.
In a fantastically nonchalant interview with Rolling Stone, the ‘Yellowstone’ titan delves directly into what makes Kevin Costner Kevin F*cking Costner. For one, the actor does love this F-word just as much as his ranching patriarch John Dutton, and uses it frequently. Secondly? The man smoked a lot – and we mean a lot – of pot. For 40 years.
“Yeah, for 40 years I had a really good time smoking. A really good f–king time,” Costner told the top trade in 2019. “I mean, I never smoked when I woke up. And I never smoked habitually. I did it to have a good time when I felt like I was going to have a good time,” he says.
So what causes a man who can do pretty much whatever he wants whenever he wants from ever picking up the ganja again?
“About five years ago, I wasn’t having a good time anymore, so I just stopped. Which is kind of my motto. If I’m not having a good time doing something, stop doing it.”
Kevin Costner, ladies and gentlemen. But c’mon, there has to be more to it, right? No one quits a 40-year relationship without a really good reason, right?
‘Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner “Was Raised in a Very Conservative Way” – But Pot Broke Him Free
“I don’t know if it’s because it’s so powerful now, I’m not sure what it was, but the thing that I used to hear my fellow tokers say is, ‘It makes me paranoid,’ and I was always thinking to myself, ‘Fuck, I’m glad this doesn’t make me paranoid because I really like it,” Costner laments to Rolling Stone.
Unfortunately for the megastar and his 4-decade-romance with weed – that’s exactly what ended up happening, too.
“But then I started feeling what some of the others felt and I thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to keep doing this.’ I gave it about eight more tries but I was pretty certain something was wrong, so I quit doing it,” he continues.
As for how he found marijuana in the first place, Costner says that’s a little more complicated – but oh, so freeing.
“I was raised in a very conservative way,” he reveals, “but I remember when I started smoking, I have to tell you honestly, I started thinking differently.”
“All of a sudden… The conservative thing flew right out the window. I saw things in a different way. And I think it actually helped me come to that decision internally, which is, ‘Who are you?’ You know, ‘Who are you?’”
I didn’t think I’d ever type this, but thank you, weed, for giving us Kevin Costner.
