‘Yellowstone’ TV Star Luke Grimes Called Kayce and Rip ‘Two Alpha Type Dudes Trying to Work Together’

“Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes had to fight co-star Cole Hauser when their two characters, Kayce Dutton and Rip Wheeler, butted heads over the role of ranch foreman on the show. And in a 2019 interview with Screen Rant, Grimes said that the Kayce-Rip conflict was a key piece of the storyline in Season 2 of “Yellowstone.”

Grimes described the pair as “two Alpha-type dudes” who have to work together for the sake of the Dutton ranch. And he pointed out that the outcome of their fight is ultimately decided not by either one of them but by Kayce’s father John Dutton (Kevin Costner).

“That’s a big storyline in Season 2, just how do you get these two Alpha-type dudes to work together rather than against each other,” Grimes said. “And, you know, they have to realize who the real boss is. So, yeah, that was a really fun story. It’s not a fun storyline at all, but it was fun to work on.”

‘Yellowstone’ Star Says Series Has Universal Appeal

More recently, Grimes spoke to Monsters & Critics last December. And in the interview, he explained that “Yellowstone” is succeeding largely on the basis of series co-creator Taylor Sheridan’s writing.

“I think a lot of the strength of the show is Taylor Sheridan’s writing, the world that he has created. I’ve been a big fan of his for a long time, and there’s just something that hits really close to home,” Grimes said. “Even though a lot of his stuff can be macho or Western or whatever, I think it appeals to everyone because it’s very human. That’s why I was drawn to it. I just fell in love with the characters first. The world just happens to be the world that it’s in. I think a lot of people see a billboard for it, and they see cowboy hats and guns, and they think, ‘Well, maybe that’s not for me.’ But I think there really is something for everyone.”

Grimes wouldn’t say much about Season 4, but he did say that Sheridan never ceases to surprise him with where he takes the show. Sheridan always manages to find some new pathway for the storyline to take that no one saw coming, Grimes said, and that’s what makes “Yellowstone” so compelling.

Grimes did say that fans can look for a continuation of the existing pattern of Kayce and John mending their relationship and figuring each other out more.

“Watching them bounce off of each other and attract and retract is part of why the drama is so fascinating,” he said.
