‘Yellowstone’ TV: The Unique Connection Show Creator Taylor Sheridan Has to the ‘NCIS’ Franchise

Did you know that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan worked on NCIS: Los Angeles?

Aside from creating hit series, Sheridan also acts. In 2011, he appeared on the NCIS: Los Angeles spinoff as a guest star. He portrayed the character of Navy Captain Jennings in Season 2 Episode 9 “Enemy Within.” His cameo with Nell Jones is brief but matters in the grand scheme of the plot.

According to IMDB, the episode is summarized as: “A Latino day laborer dies, and a lieutenant commander in Naval intelligence disappears; Callen and company investigate; G and Sam find evidence suggesting an assassination plot against a visiting Venezuelan politician; the team thwart it.”

Taylor Sheridan also has another surprising connection to the NCIS franchise. he cast an NCIS: New Orleans star in his upcoming Paramount+ original series. Mayor of Kingstown will star Jeremy Renner, famously known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel franchise. Derek Webster has signed on to the show.

Webster is no stranger to the naval franchise. He appeared in NOLA as FBI agent Raymond Isler. He was also featured in three JAG episodes, two episodes of NCIS, and an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, this wasn’t Sheridan’s first time portraying a law enforcement officer. His first acting credit was on Walker Texas Ranger back in 1995 as Vernon. He later guest-starred on crime shows including Veronica Mars, CSI: NY, NYPD Blue, among other notable television shows.

Additionally, Taylor Sheridan portrayed Deputy Chief David Hale on Sons of Anarchy between 2008 and 2010. He reprised his role in a few shorts for the series and appeared at fan conventions.

How Taylor Sheridan Was Inspired to Create ‘Yellowstone’

Furthermore, Yellowstone and Taylor Sheridan have become household names. The actor/creator/writer/director has made his mark on the television industry. He wrote or co-wrote every single episode of the series that he co-created. Sheridan currently holds the record for the most episodes directed with 9 out of 29.

How exactly did he create Yellowstone? He revealed to Texas Highways that his “family ranch has informed ‘Yellowstone’ in many ways.”

Finally, for Taylor Sheridan, losing his ranch was the biggest inspiration for this series.

“When you write, it’s always of an autobiographical nature,” he added. As Sheridan worked on his family’s ranch as a young boy. Unfortunately, his family sold the ranch in 1991 after his parents’ divorce. It hit him so hard that he didn’t talk to his mother, Susan Drew, for a year. They decided to sell it after the family realized that she couldn’t run it by herself, as Taylor Sheridan was studying at Texas State University.
