‘Yellowstone’ TV: How Thomas Rainwater’s Murky Backstory May Play Into Season 4 Plot

by Thad Mitchell

Yellowstone fans are an impatient bunch and have been passing the time by speculating what the new season might hold. One interesting character that figures to play a prominent role in the new season is Native American Chief Thomas Rainwater.

Played by veteran actor Gil Birmingham, Rainwater is an intriguing character on the show.

The Broken Rock Tribe leader has a tumultuous relationship with John Dutton and his family. Rainwater believes Yellowstone Ranch rightfully belongs to him and his people. This puts him in direct conflict with Dutton as the ranch has been in his family for over a century.

Rainwater started off the series as a primary antagonist and adversary to John Dutton. Season two of Yellowstone saw the two men come to an uneasy truce in order to battle a common foe — the Beck Brothers. It’s been peaceful between the tribe and the Duttons since the truce but the arrival of Angela Blue Thunder has thrown a wrench into the uneasy peace.

“When two men want the same thing, they can either share it or fight for it,” Rainwater said in a previous season.

Yellowstone Could Explore Thomas Rainwater’s Past

We don’t know a whole lot about Rainwater’s past and his backstory is murky at best. He’s never met his birth mother and was raised to believe he was of Mexican descent. He didn’t discover his Native American heritage until he was much older. He’s highly and intelligent and cunning, obtaining a degree from Harvard University. He also possesses bodily scars though it has not been revealed how they got there. We also know he cares deeply for his tribe people and is more than willing to get his hands dirty to see them succeed.

Some fans speculate that there is more to Rainwater than meets the eye. He’s an intriguing character, to say the least, and Yellowstone watchers would love to know more about him. Could there be something in his past that makes him believe Yellowstone Ranch is a must-get for his tribe? He could perhaps have some yet known ties to the property that we’ve not seen yet.

Some fans also believe we will see the chief reemerge as a primary enemy and challenger of the Duttons. With Angela Blue Thunder whispering in his ear, it is entirely possible he makes another play to obtain the ranch by any means necessary. Could it be him that is behind the attacks on the Dutton family at the end of season three?

Yellowstone fans hope to learn more about Thomas Rainwater in the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see what direction the writers take his character as there a number of ways it could go. The prediction here is that the uneasy alliance between Rainwater and the Dutton family continues. The chief has shown himself to be a rational man and seems willing to do what is right for his people.
