Jamie Dutton is the black sheep of the Dutton family, no matter how hard he tries to please his father. Here we count down some of the Harvard lawyer’s best quotes throughout season one.

In season one, we see Jamie Dutton struggle with his placement in the family. Everything he does is to get his father’s approval. In later seasons we find out a couple of reasons why he can never get that. However, we won’t spoil that for you just yet.

Between cleaning up messes that usually involve Kayce going to jail, running for public office, as well as the never-ending fights with Beth, Jamie faces a choice. He must decide whether his true allegiances lay; is he loyal to the Dutton name, no matter what? By the end of season one, he makes that choice when selling out the skeletons in his father’s closet to a journalist from New York who is looking to bring them all down.

Top Ten Quotes From Jamie Dutton

Here are Jamie Dutton’s best quotes from season one of Yellowstone, however, we recommend you carry on to season two and three. It gets a lot juicer, though, and Jamie’s character changes entirely. But again, that’s a spoiler for another time.

  1. You want to suggest to my father that he clear-cut his land. Be my guest. You’re a braver man than me.
  2. The only thing we haven’t done in years is see you, Kayce.
  3. Well, you know, I’m not gay. I’m celibate because I am terrified to get somebody pregnant and pass on the gene that made you.
  4. I was thinking about cancer. What it is, essentially. It’s the body cells so deformed they turn on the body itself. Start feeding. Cancer doesn’t have much foresight, so it kills its host, which kills it. Cancer is suicide from the inside out. That’s what you are, Beth.
  5. Did you trade the barrel of your government-issued service pistol to a private citizen? Is there any record of this trade? Are there any witnesses? Are there any witnesses to the shooting in question? Is there any forensic evidence that ties my brother to the scene other than a ballistics match to your weapon?
  6. Beth, if you just made your one phone call from jail, you wasted it.
  7. If hating me keeps you from hating yourself, I’ll be that for you, Beth. That’s what family’s for.
  8. You know, I gotta be honest with you, I’m not an idealist. I don’t want you to think my goal is changing the world… My goal is the opposite of change.
  9. I realized something last night. The only way to protect my father’s legacy is to destroy the man. I didn’t think it was going to be this hard.
  10. Yeah, I know what you are doing. You are doing what you always do. You’re making a giant cry for help. Help from what? F*ck knows, Beth? So just keep it up, keep acting like the only 34-year-old on spring break, and we’ll all keep giving you attention.

There aren’t many family relationships as toxic as the one Beth and Jamie display. Throughout the Yellowstone series, they have hardly ever been on the same page, which is usually a result of when John or Kayce need their help.

Regardless, we feel bad for the man who isn’t allowed to have any dreams of his own, especially when they conflict with the direct interest of the Dutton ranch. We would tell Jamie to run far away, but he is forever stuck: a constant hamster wheel of trying to please the man he calls father.
