‘Yellowstone’ TV: What Kelsey Asbille Thinks Monica Has in ‘Common’ With John Dutton

by Jon D. B.

In this excellent HeyUGuys interview with the entire Yellowstone cast, Kelsey Asbille reveals Monica Dutton’s common ground with patriarch John Dutton.

Back when Yellowstone Season 2 hit audiences, entertainment trade HeyUGuys conducted a great set of interviews with the entire cast. Media host DaniElle DeLaite asks some pertinent questions within – and a true highlight comes at the 4:50 mark, which you can watch below.

At this point in their interview, DeLaite cites a specific Season 2 line (and one of the series’ best) from Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, paraphrasing the following:

“That’s the thing about being a grandfather. I get to do all the things I wish I’d done with my children. And the things I regret, I get to do different.”

She wants to know what this means for Monica, and Asbille gives an in-depth answer, which we’ve transcribed below.

Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, Neal McDonough, Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly are interviewed for season 2 of their hit TV show Yellowstone. Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson the series also stars Brecken Merrill, Jefferson White, Ian Bohen, Denim Richards and Danny Huston. DaniElle DeLaite talks to the stars.

‘Yellowstone’s Kelsey Asbille on Monica & John Dutton’s Common Ground

“I think that’s something Monica is always, kind of, on her back-foot about,” the actor begins. “She doesn’t understand this family and their dynamic – and what they’re after. In a way, she feels so isolated, even when she tries to be a part of the family… But always ends up feeling so isolated from them.”

Asiblle does, however, double back on these words after pondering Season 2, which would bring Monica, Kayce, and Tate directly into the Dutton ranch fold. And through it, she felt Monica finally connect with patriarch John.

“But at the same time, I think in [Season 2], she does see that maybe John and her have something in common… Which is that fight to keep your family together,” she clarifies within.

DeLaite then passes the baton to Kayce Dutton’s Luke Grimes in this same vein, as she found the character’s transformation into a sort of “family man” for Season 2 rather fascinating. Grimes did, too, and didn’t really agree with the decision at first.

“I think he goes into Season 2 pretty determined to make a choice. ‘I’m gonna come back, and I’m gonna do what it takes,'” Grimes begins of Kayce.

“I remember when I [first] read that… It felt so ‘un-Kayce’ to me. And then I talked to [creator & writer Taylor Sheridan] and he’s like, ‘Well, he’s doing it for Tate.’ Everything he’s doing now is for Tate.”
