Luke Grimes, the actor that plays Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, opens up about how Taylor Sheridan made such a convincing show.

As dedicated Yellowstone fans, we live and die by the action and drama that happens on the Dutton Ranch.

Luke Grimes, the actor that portrays our beloved cowboy Kayce Dutton, reveals how producer Taylor Sheridan was able to create such a convincing ‘macho’ western storyline.

“I think a lot of the strength of the show is Taylor Sheridan’s writing, the world that he has created. I’ve been a big fan of his for a long time, and there’s just something that hits really close to home.”

Grime says that even though many viewers can’t relate to the wild west and cowboy lifestyle in Montana, Sheridan reels viewers in with its human element. That’s why Grime auditioned for Kayce in the first place.

“Even though a lot of his stuff can be macho or western or whatever, I think it appeals to everyone because it’s very human. That’s why I was drawn to it. I just fell in love with the characters first.”

Luke Grimes explains that many people knock the show before they have seen it. He says this is due to the impression that it won’t relate to them.

“The world just happens to be the world that it’s in. I think a lot of people see a billboard for it, and they see cowboy hats and guns, and they think, ‘Well, maybe that’s not for me’. But I think there really is something for everyone.”

The star says regardless of this persona, word of mouth is what helped notify viewers that it’s a great show.

Strike that, an amazing show.

Luke Grimes Becomes a Cowboy

In addition, the show’s authenticity element helped make the show more immersive. Luke Grimes reveals that he had to undergo rigorous cowboy training to better portray Kayce Dutton.

“It started about two months before we began filming when I got the part. Taylor’s really into authenticity, so I was on horseback almost every day. When we got to Utah, where we filmed the first season, a lot of us went on a cowboy camp where we went on a pack trip that went out for three nights- taking these horses up mountains, jumping creeks, and doing a lot of stuff that a lot of us had never done before just to try to get us into the feel of the place and of the world. Also, to try to make us fall in love with this way of life. It really worked.”

It really did. I don’t know about everyone else, but I was convinced that the actors had been riding horses their whole lives. Job well done, Luke Grimes, and especially to Taylor Sheridan.
