The Massachusetts Medical Examiner has released the cause of death for The Wahlburgers star Henry “Nacho” Laun. The beloved character in the series died on June 1. He was 54.

According to the medical investigator, Laun died of a cocaine overdose, reported TMZ, who obtained a copy of the certificate.

People found Nacho in his car unconscious at a Massachusetts gas station. He was on a road trip from Boston to Cape Cod, according to friends. TMZ said hospital officials put him on a respirator because he couldn’t breathe on his own. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown.

Laun’s friends and family knew he was struggling with drug addiction. However, they believed he was cleaning himself up, TMZ reported. The death was still a shock.

Nacho was one of the most beloved characters on The Wahlburgers, mostly because of his ability/willingness to eat disgusting or massive amounts of food. Mark Wahlberg, co-owner of Wahlburgers with his family, brought Nacho onto Jimmy Kimmel Live once to show off his gastronomical gift. Nacho ate wasabi and drank hot sauce to the horror of the crowd and likely many watching at home.

Laun and Mark Wahlberg met as teenagers, and have been friends since. He called Nacho “a superstar in the making,” the A-List actor said in a clip from the show.

Nacho’s attorney James Neyman told People magazine that Nacho’s star was only rising.

“He was kind of a natural on the show,” Neyman said. “He was a very likable character and wherever we went, he was constantly recognized. … Wherever we went, maybe it’s because we were in Boston, someone would say ‘Hey are you Nacho? Is that Nacho?’ He never experienced anything like it. It was almost like a phenomenon.”

Neyman told People The Wahlburgers star’s mother Emilce Laun died last year. They were very close, and he struggled greatly after her death. “He took her passing hard as is understandable, and regrettably he has passed roughly a year later,” the attorney said.

Nacho Is The Second ‘The Wahlburgers’ Star To Die Recently

Alma Wahlberg, the mother of Mark and Donnie Wahlberg and their seven siblings died in April.

Donnie Wahlberg posted a heartfelt message to his mother on Instagram to announce her death. She had been suffering from years of declining health.

“Like so many moms who struggled, overcame odds, made something from nothing, and pulled off the impossible for their children, she never complained,” he wrote. “She did what needed to be done, most often, with a smile. She made the best of times in the worst of times.”

Wahlberg went on to compliment his mother’s strength and love.

“That was Alma — mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, friend, ally, warrior, angel. She made no apologies for who she was, but never put herself above anyone else. She kicked our butts if we messed up, kicked anyone else’s butts if they messed with us. Taught us right, made us pay the price when we were wrong,” Wahlberg continued. “She was the epitome of the word grace.”
