With the debut of The CW’s Walker, fans of Jared Padalecki got to see him return to the screen with a new role. The same goes for his wife, Genevieve Padalecki.
For those somehow unaware of the pair and their place on smash-hit show Supernatural, the Padalecki’s met on set. Further, Genevieve had taken on a reoccurring role on the program, where she met Jared, who was playing Sam Winchester.
Since February 27, 2010 the pair have been married, but working together was actually not that common. While Genevieve had a reoccurring role, she was mostly just in Season 4. Now, with Genevieve taking on the role of Emily on Walker and Jared playing the titular Walker, the pair get to work together again.
The pair working together again actually coincides with the Walker reboot’s focus. The original Walker, Texas Ranger was focused on action and justice. On the other hand, the reboot is putting more effort into the emotions behind the characters.
In an interview with Wide Open Country, Genevieve explained the key difference.
“The reboot is about the heart of the family and the massive wound that the family is dealing with after Emily’s death,” she explained. “It has a Chuck Norris ‘bad guy of the week’ vibe to it but there’s a much more current messaging and transparency and I feel like the heart of the show is what’s going to drive the story.”
Differences On and Off Set of Walker
From Genevieve’s perspective, the change in focus is not the only key difference. Considering the show is being filmed in Austin, Texas, where her and Jared raise their children, it’s an all-around improvement.
To film Supernatural, Padalecki was often on the road. Filming in Canada, Los Angeles or wherever the job was taking him meant he was often far from his family. Not anymore, says Padalecki.
“[It’s] the first time since we’ve been together that we’ve worked and lived in the same place…we’ve been retraining our minds,” Padalecki said. “It’s been very important for our family.”
In another interview with EW, Padalecki also added more context to getting to work alongside Jared. One day on vacation, her husband came in and asked if she’d like to be on Walker.
“Jared had been developing the show and we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary in Park City, and his phone kept ringing at dinner and it was [showrunner] Anna [Fricke],” Padalecki said. “So he stepped outside and he came back and said, ‘I have something really interesting to ask you. How do you feel about playing my wife?’ The story didn’t matter. I was able to be a part of that journey and also be alongside my husband, so it really felt like a no-brainer.”
While she is portraying a murdered woman that is part of the tension and angst of Walker, it works well. When you’ve got chemistry like they do, who is surprised?
