‘Walker’ Star Jared Padalecki Raises Just Under $25,000 to Honor ‘Supernatural’ Costar Who Died of Cancer

Airing for 15 seasons, “Supernatural” may have featured ghosts, demons, and monsters, but it was about family more than anything. That also extended off-screen to the cast and crew as well. Series lead and current “Walker” star Jared Padalecki is raising money in honor of a co-star who passed away from cancer.

Padelicki worked with actor Holli DeWees on the set of the series. DeWees joined the ever-expansive “Supernatural” family as a result. And family takes care of each other. Padelicki recently started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for DeWees children. He wanted to make sure they were taken care of after their mother’s passing.

Kicking off the campaign earlier this week, Padelicki said he planned to honor DeWees and her spirit. In the months leading up to her death, DeWees offered a raw and candid account of her battle with breast cancer. She often posted updates on her Instagram account.

Padalecki’s campaign grew past the initial goal of $10,000 on the platform. In just three days, the campaign raised just shy of $25,000. Not a bad amount at all. “Supernatural” fans are a passionate bunch that cares about each other.

Padalecki kicked off the fundraising with a message. “Hey y’all. As some of you may have seen, one of our own #SPNFamily members has recently passed away from a brave battle with cancer.”

The actor said that he like many others felt inspired by DeWees. He realized her family needed financial assistance and wanted to help.

“She worked to make so many lives better, and now we have an opportunity to take up her mantle and provide some help to the most important people in her life – her kids,” he wrote.

Jared Padalecki and His Campaign

Jared Padalecki initially planned to sweeten the pot for potential donors. He wanted to raffle off a Zoom call with himself as part of the campaign. But GoFundMe prevented such gestures in its fundraising on the platform. Instead, the actor plans to honor the request by raffling off the video chat on a different platform Rafflecopter instead.

Padalecki wanted to thank all of the “Supernatural” fans for helping out with the campaign. He said he felt heartbroken by the loss of DeWees. The two became friends in real life. During one exchange, she photobombed a picture of Padalecki and also co-star Misha Collins on Instagram.

“Thank y’all so much for helping her family make it through this incredibly difficult time,” he said.

DeWees continued to update her Instagram account to the very end. In May, she said she was excited her hair was finally growing back after chemo. DeWees was married and the couple had two children together. Padalecki thanks fans for their support.
