For the first time since they wrote the film “Good Will Hunting” together, Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have written another movie. This is the script for the upcoming film, “The Last Duel.”

According to PEOPLE, “The Last Duel” tells the story of a French woman, Marguerite de Carrouges, and when she was attacked by Jacques Le Gris. She is the wife of Jean de Carrouges. And Le Gris was once their friend. He claims that he did not attack Marguerite.

Following her attack, her husband Jean decides to get justice by getting Le Gris to duel him. Dueling was a formal form of fighting. So, in the film it is watched over by Count Pierre d’Alençon. This duel was the very last duel officially allowed by the French government.

“The Last Duel” screenplay by Affleck and Damon is based on a book by Eric Jager. The book is titled, “The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal and Trial by Combat in Medieval France.”

Matt Damon will play the husband, Jean de Carrouges. Ben Affleck will play Count Pierre d’Alençon. Actress Jodie Comer of “Killing Eve” fame will play Marguerite de Carrouges. Adam Driver of “Star Wars,” “Girls,” and “Marriage Story” fame will play Jacques Le Gris. “The Last Duel” is directed by Ridley Scott, the famous director behind such hit films as “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” “Thelma & Louise,” “Gladiator,” and “The Martian.”

Famous Writers of ‘The Last Duel’ Said the Woman at the Center of the Story is ‘Heroic’

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon had a lot of success with “Good Will Hunting.”

They both won Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay. The film also led to an Academy Award for Robin Williams for Best Supporting Actor. They work on the script for “The Last Duel” with Nicole Holofcener.

The three writers recently released a statement about the upcoming film. In it, they shared how they “admired” the character of Marguerite de Carrouges.

“This film is an effort to retell the story of a heroic woman from history whom most people haven’t heard of,” the statement read. “We admired her bravery and resolute determination and felt this was both a story that needed to be told and one whose drama would captivate audiences the way it moved us as writers.”

The film also allowed the writers a chance to explore how human nature has not changed in some ways over the centuries, as well as explore what truth means.

“As we further explored the story, we found so many aspects of the formal, codified patriarchy of 14th century Western Europe to still be present in vestigial ways (and in some cases almost unchanged) in today’s society,” the writers also shared. “We chose to use the device of telling the story from several character’s perspectives in order to examine the immutable fact that although often multiple people who experience the same event come away with differing accounts, there can only be one truth.”
