Actor Matthew McConaughey decided to cover the late, great Johnny Cash, and the results were: alright, alright, alright.

The video resurfaces from 2012. McConaughey acted as host for We Walk the Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash. He also decided to get in on the fun as well. The event celebrated the life and legacy of Cash, who died in 2003 at 71. The event included performances by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Ronnie Dunn, John Hiatt, Amy Lee, Shooter Jennings, Lucinda Williams, Jamey Johnson, Rhett Miller and Andy Grammer.

Matthew McConaughey performed “The Man Comes Around.”

Cash’s career spanned almost 50 years. The singer was still active up to his death. He produced a number of classics including “Ring of Fire,” “A Boy Named Sue” and “Folsom Prison Blues”. But for his performance, McConaughey chose to perform “The Man Comes Around.” Cash wrote and recorded the song shortly before his death.

“This next performer we have coming up here tonight. He’s new to this game,” McConaughey said. He appeared slightly nervous as he rolled up his sleeves. “You may know of him from the big screen. You may know of him from seeing him at a Long Horn game. [Or] you may know of him from late night bongo sessions. I promise you he hasn’t done this before. Let’s give a warm, awesome welcome to a man most of the time I really love to spend time with – me.”

While no one could ever replace The Man in Black on vocals, McConaughey has a fun time up on stage. When he announced he would be singing a song, the crowd started cheering and stayed enthusiastic for his performance. McConaughey is better known for his works on the silver screen. He’s starred films such as “Interstellar,” “Dallas Buyers Club and “Magic Mike”.

Cash would have turned 88-years-old back in February.
