Recently, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks took over The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The pair did a great job hosting the talk show. In fact, it might have been one of the best episodes of the long-running series in years. Part of the greatness of the episode was the Zoom interview with Oscar-winner and potential Texas gubernatorial candidate Matthew McConaughey.
Many fans don’t realize that Matthew McConaughey and Trisha Yearwood go way back. In fact, one of his first acting gigs was Trisha’s “Walkaway Joe,” video. He played the titular role. So, it wasn’t just three megastars disguising a plug for an upcoming project as a conversation. It really felt like they were catching up and having a good talk.
Matthew McConaughey opened up about a long list of things during the interview. He didn’t just talk about his professional life or potential political aspirations. At one point, he took some time to talk about his family. More specifically, he told Trisha and Garth how he met his wife, Camila Alves.
How Matthew McConaughey Met Camila Alves
To set the scene, Trisha Yearwood refers to Matthew McConaughey’s book Greenlights. In that book he discusses meeting Camila Alves for the first time in a club. During the written account he says she was “floating on air.” Trisha wanted to know if Camila had ever revealed her first impression to Matthew.
Luckily for us, she has. Matthew McConaughey said that she saw him first.
Camila Alves was standing in line to get a drink at the bar. However, the guy in front of her was taking forever to order. According to McConaughey, she said, “I was trying to get a simple drink at the bar. There was one guy in front of me and he had on this Rasta hat, and this long, blond, curly hair in the back. He had on shorts, a t-shirt, and was wearing flip flops in the club. But, at this moment, he was in the middle of a 13-minute, very specific, detail-oriented recipe to the bartender, the exact Margarita that he wanted.”
Alves was standing behind this guy wondering what his deal was. She thought to herself that she was in the wrong line. At the very least, she picked the wrong person to get behind for a drink. Furthermore, she thought to herself, “What the hell is this guy doing? This is taking forever.”
Then, Matthew McConaughey revealed, “Well, that turned out to be me.”
He went on to say that the combination of his highly specific drink order, the flip flops, and the Rasta hat helped to get his foot in the door with his future wife. She at least thought he might be interesting.
