WATCH: Netflix Unveils Trailer for New Western Show ‘How to Be a Cowboy’

by John Jamison

Mount up, Netflix subscribers. The rodeo is coming to town. And it’s coming in the form of a new docuseries with social media bull riding sensation Dale Brisby at its center. “How to Be a Cowboy” releases on the streaming platform come September 1. And based on the trailer, the show seeks to educate the world on all things cowboy.

It wouldn’t be Dale Brisby if they didn’t try to accomplish that feat through a bit of humor. The ranch managing, bull riding, master’s degree holding social media star is a popular cowboy comedian on platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Now, he’s bringing all of that knowledge to a wider audience.

“Dale Brisby uses social media savvy and rodeo skills to keep cowboy traditions alive — and now he’s teaching the world how to cowboy right,” the Netflix description of “How to Be a Cowboy” reads.

“The cowboy life is about tradition. We are self-reliant and answer to no one,” Brisby narrates over some smooth horseback camera shots before answering a phone call from his mom. “There’s a lot to learn from our way of life. So you may as well learn it from the best. Through social media, I brought our traditions into the future. Now I’m bringing ’em to you”

The trailer for “How to Be a Cowboy” continues with looks at Radiator Ranch. Here, Brisby is hard at work training the next generation of cowboys. It features what appears to be the ranch’s first female intern, who shows up her peers by skillfully taking a bull for a ride.

“She’s actually more cowboy and tougher than all of us,” Brisby says.

The trailer goes on to tease the beginning of rodeo season, the birth of a calf on the ranch, and a few reasonably-sized explosions.

‘How to Be a Cowboy’ Star Dale Brisby is the Real Deal

Social media sensation” doesn’t always feel like the most credible of titles. Fortunately, that’s the least of Dale Brisby’s many qualifications.

The star of the upcoming Netflix show is a bonafide bull rider and rodeo competitor. And it’s clearly the great passion of his life. The Texas native started young, eventually pursuing college rodeo at Texas A&M University. There, he earned his undergraduate degree and eventually a master’s in agricultural leadership and education.

It seems the education paid off, considering he manages Radiator Ranch Cattle Company and is about to be the star of a Netflix show that is, for all intents and purposes, educational.

“I have a really good time rodeoing and I like to live that life through social media. I am grateful every day that anyone might find what I do entertaining enough to give me a second look,” Brisby told Rodeo News in 2017.
