Jeffrey Knight of Long Beach, California, appeared on an episode of Wheel of Fortune last week and did very well. He won a trip to Hawaii and more than $14,000.
He told the Long Beach Press Telegram that he is a lifelong fan of the show. So to make it on was a big deal, but to play as well as he did and make the bonus round was something special.
Contestants are always given the same set of letters in the bonus round: R, S, T, L, N, and E. Knight was allowed to choose his five extra letters, but it didn’t help him much. Even after he guessed A, P, G, and H, the board was still pretty bare.
This is what he was left with.

The audience was upset and even Sajak seemed to feel bad for Knight. “I’d rather be here than up there, quite frankly.”
Kevin didn’t pick up on the mistake, and didn’t solve the puzzle. He lost out on an additional $38,000.

Sajak Fesses Up To ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Mishap
In the commentary period as the credits rolled, Pat Sajak told Vanna White he screwed up.
The answer to the puzzle was “Quite Frankly.” Sajak had said those words seconds before the timer began.
“I wonder how many people at home caught it,” he told White. “There weren’t many letters up there and I said, ‘I’d rather be here than up there, quite frankly’ — which was the puzzle. But it goes to show you that people are concentrating and they’re not paying any attention to me.”
But he admits that there was no reason Knight should have picked up on the slip-up.
“It’s funny what your … mouth will say when your brain says, ‘You shouldn’t do that,” he joked.
Knight really wishes he had though, he told the Long Beach Press Telegram.
“I really wanted to win,” Knight said. “I was really intense… And then he goes with his ‘quite frankly’ line, but I was drawing a complete blank. Right after the theme music came on, (Sajak) realized what happened. Now it’s big news.”
It wasn’t just about the prize money for Knight. It was also about his pride.
“This is kind of crazy,” Knight said. “I’m better known for missing the answer that the host gave to me.”
