White and co-host Pat Sajak have been at the helm of Wheel of Fortune since 1983. It’s the longest-running game show on American television with more than 7,000 aired episodes. Therefore she’s seen it all during her almost four decades on the show.
Five years ago, White joined the late legendary interviewer on Larry King Now. The pair played a game King called “If You Only Knew” where he fired off quick questions to his guests. During the segment, he asked her who was the craziest Wheel of Fortune contestant on the show. She responded in two parts.
“One show, this girl won. And she literally picked Pat [Sajak] up and carried him around jumping up and down,” White amusingly recalled on Larry King Now.
However, she also went on to share her personal favorite moment on the game show. As King even mentions, the moment could bring tears to your eyes because of how much the moment meant to one contestant’s life.
“One of my favorite shows, a guy just won a brand new car, and he said, ‘I don’t have to take the bus anymore.’ That was special… You really do feel like you change people’s lives, and you do on our show,” White shared.
‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestant Becomes First-Ever to Win a New Home
As Vanna White said, Wheel of Fortune has the power to change people’s lives when they win on the game show. There may not be a better example of that than her story that she shared with Larry King. Yet just two weeks ago, a contestant named Laura’s life was definitely changed as well.
The game show gives away some huge prizes during its Bonus Round. But they’ve arguably never given away as big a prize as they did in late April. Previous to Laura’s attempt to win even more cash and prizes in the Bonus Round, Pat Sajak filled her in on some exciting possibilities if she won. A new car was up for grabs, an extra $100,000, or even a brand new home.
As the four-word Phrase was revealed, Laura only had four letters on the board to work with out of 15. She chose G, H, P, and O as her four additional letters. Even her guesses only added four more letters to the board, that was enough for Laura. She guessed “I CAUGHT A GLIMPSE” and couldn’t contain her excitement as Sajak told her she had won a new house.
Laura became the first Wheel of Fortune champion to earn a new home on the game show. It was a historic episode of the long-running show. Numerous players have won new cars, exotic vacations, and enormous cash prizes. However, Laura is in a category all unto herself when it comes to Wheel of Fortune prizes. She took home a Bonus Round prize worth a whopping $375,000.
As Pat Sajak said after Laura won, “Well, this is just nuts!” Indeed it was.
