Almost everyone dreams of being famous someday. There is an old saying that everyone gets their fifteen seconds of fame. Well, the co-host of Wheel of Fortune, Vanna White, has been famous for a long time.

White joined Wheel of Fortune in 1982 after a series of things lead to her taking over the role of hostess. Even though she had begun her acting career a few years earlier, she wouldn’t have been considered famous. She was however known, which is more than most people can say.

Once she got on Wheel of Fortune, her life went underwent a certain amount of change. Fame didn’t seem to change her life all that much, but subtly, it did. White never thought that she was treated any differently than she used to be.

That being said, fame did have its drawbacks. She was not always a fan of being famous, nor did she like everything about it.

In an interview with Believer Magazine in 2018, White explained why she wasn’t prepared for her fame. She was asked to describe how vulnerable being famous makes you.

“It is definitely not what you think it is. You lose a tremendous amount of privacy,” White explained. “Everybody wants to be in your world and they think that for some reason your world is different from their world. And it’s not. We all do the same thing. We all put our pants on the same way.”

Vanna White continued to explain that being famous is something that she was never prepared for. The Wheel of Fortune star explained that she always felt that she was just a normal person. She never thought that people put her on a pedestal.

“You know, I’m a mother of two. I did homework with my kids, [and] I go to the grocery store. I don’t know why there’s this feeling of celebrities being different—put up on a higher echelon or something. I’m not quite sure what it is, but I feel very normal,” White said in the interview.

She seemed to be totally fine with the life she lives, never feeling like her fame made her special. The Wheel of Fortune host, though, then mentioned the downsides to her fame.

“And the only downside is when you go out —it’s not a downside, but you’re always getting recognized, or you—if you go out, say, just looking absolutely horrible, somebody might take a picture of you and put it on social media or in some magazine and make up some story. Those things I do not like.”

In the end, while being famous sounds like a walk in the park, there is a lot more than meets the eye. White knows this first hand. It made her grow up quicker than she might have otherwise. It showed her a different way through life than others experienced.
