Nothing is more maddening than getting into a new show, only to have it go on hiatus after a handful of episodes. And that’s exactly what happened with “Big Sky.” It premiered as a mid-season replacement last November on ABC, but the most recent episode aired almost two months ago in February.
Not to worry “Big Sky” fans! The show picks up again with new episodes on April 13, 2021.
Big Trouble in ‘Big Sky’
For the uninitiated, “Big Sky” begins with private detectives Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury) and Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe), along with his estranged wife Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick), looking for two missing sisters in Montana. They soon learn, however, that the girls are just the tip of the iceberg and race against the clock to find and stop the murderous long-haul truck driver and his accomplice who are responsible.
The series is based on the C.J. Box novel “The Highway.” In December 2020, ABC ordered six more episodes, bringing the first season total to 16. The ninth episode aired on February 2021, and the remaining seven episodes, which begin airing in April, will focus on a new mystery storyline.
Another David E. Kelley Success
David E. Kelley is the show’s creator. Television viewers are likely familiar with one or more of his earlier hit series. These include “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Public,” and “Big Little Lies.” He’s married to actress Michelle Pfeiffer and began his career as a lawyer in Boston.
Kelley recently told The Hollywood Reporter what first drew him to “Big Sky”: “I’ve loved the books by C.J. Box. Fantastic characters, fantastic setting in Montana. It’s a bit of a thriller ride but also a character piece.”

If you need to rewatch earlier episodes of “Big Sky” or want to catch up before the show starts again in April, they’re available on Hulu.
As for what fans can expect in the new episodes, Kelley says, “There’s … a lot of dark secrets and ugliness that goes on. So, one moment you’ll be leaning in, the next moment not so much. We think of this as a thrill ride, and a great piece of entertainment at 10 o’clock at night. We’ve got a lot of great characters that you’ll come to feel for and care for as the series evolves.”
If you haven’t already seen “Big Sky,” you owe it to yourself to watch at least an episode or two and give it a chance to pull you into its many twists and turns.
