Why Vanna White Said Playboy Cover Shoot Was ‘Something I Shouldn’t Have Done’

Vanna White admits that her Playboy cover shoot wasn’t the best idea.

The popular Wheel of Fortune star spoke with TIME magazine about one thing she regrets doing over the course of her long Hollywood career. Vanna said it was posing for a lingerie shoot that ended up being on the cover of Playboy magazine.

The photo ended up on the cover of the confrontational magazine in 1987. The decision to pose for the camera resulted in the star almost losing her long-time position as the official hostess on the hit TV game show.

“I said, ‘I made a mistake, I’m sorry and I just hope I don’t lose my job over it,’” she said in an interview with Fox News. “Fortunately, I didn’t. I could have, you know? I did something I shouldn’t have done.”

Vanna White Regrets Posing for “Playboy”

The star’s photo caused an array of negative commentary. The decision is one she still regrets.

White posed with no pants and a long-sleeve top in 1982. It was published five years later, right before she landed her position on Wheel of Fortune. Vanna explains how the majority of her decision was based upon monetary needs. This is previous to her taking on the well-known role that she continues to hold for over three decades.

“When I first moved to Hollywood, I was too embarrassed to ask my dad for rent money,” White said “So, I did these lingerie shots and from the moment I said I would do them, I thought, ‘I shouldn’t be doing this, but I’m not going to ask my dad for money, so I’m just going to do it!’ Once I got Wheel of Fortune and some fame, Hugh Hefner then bought those pictures.”

Hefner’s decision to publish the pictures resulted in a lawsuit by Vanna. She didn’t only sue the owner of Playboy, Hugh Hefner. White also sued the magazine in an attempt to minimize the cover’s negative impact on her overall image, according to The Washington Post. She later ends up dropping both suits.

Her Success On “Wheel of Fortune”

When it comes to her success on the show, Vanna White believes it was a situation where everything worked out accordingly.

“It’s just one of those things that every once in a while, everything falls into place,” she told Fox. “It’s just a half-hour of family fun with no bad news.”
